Hi Colleagues:

We are trying to determine if our SI leader salary is “on par” with other universities. Could you please let me know how much your leaders are paid per hr. and for how many hours per week? If you pay students on a scale how do you determine that rate? Do graduate students earn more than undergrads? If you have mentor leaders, how much are they paid?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Hi Krystal!

We pay our SI leaders $9.00 per hour for all time spent in training, during office hours, and sitting in lecture, and $12.25 per hour for all time spent leading review sessions, for the entire 15-week semester. On average, the leaders work anywhere between 6 and 10 hours per week. They are paid slightly higher than other student employees on campus (i.e. peer tutors start at $7.75 per hour). We do not have any graduate students currently employed as SI leaders, but in other areas on campus, graduate students are paid $1.00 more per hour than undergraduates (i.e. graduate peer tutors would start at $8.75 per hour). All student employees receive a $0.25 per hour raise for each year that they return to the same position.

Krystal,

Our SI Leaders are paid $8.60 per hour and work approximately 10-12 hours depending on the amount of preparation needed for the course.

Mentor SI Leaders are paid $9.40/hour and have a few extra hours per week so that they can observe the SI Leaders in their mentoring groups.

Hi Krystal,

In their first semester as leaders, our new leaders enroll in a 3 credit training course and conduct 2 one hour sessions a week (plus attend the class they are leading and do prep).  Thus they are paid in “academic credit”.   In subsequent semesters, returning leaders are paid $1200 a semester for doing 2 one hour sessions per week, preparation, class attendance, and meetings/trainings.   This averages out to about 10-12 hours a week and a salary of about $10 per hour.  Students have told me that this is one of the highest paid student jobs on our campus.  If a student only does one session a  week he/she earns $800 for the semester.  We pay them at the end of the semester provided they have fulfilled all of the duties in their contract.

Hi Krystal – The course is called EDCP 318N – Leadership in Collaborative Learning Groups and is offered through our Department of Counseling and Personnel Services department of which I am an affiliate professor.  They offer an undergraduate leadership minor and this course is one of the courses students can count for the minor.  The course covers the nuts and bolts of running an effective SI session, as well as some theoretical underpinnings of how students learn,  student engagement, learning strategies, student intellectual development, diversity, communication skills, etc.  I’d be happy to share the syllabus if you want.

The course is restricted to students working in the SI Program on our campus.  Students like the idea of getting credit for the course while learning to be an effective GSS leader (of course the money is an enticement for coming back!).  No problems with degree plans.  Most of our leaders have brought in a lot of AP credits so have some flexibility in their degree plans.

We start SI Leaders and all tutors out at $9.00 per hour. They can advance in increments of $.25 if they choose to level up under CRLA training guidelines. The maximum we pay is $10.00 per hour for those who certify at level 3. We consider our level 3 SI Leaders mentors and help train the new hires.

A typical SI consists of 7  hours a week: 3 hours of class, 2 one hour SI sessions and 2 hours of prep time.

Though they are worth more than that, that’s about all we can handle in our budget to provide over 90 Si groups during a full semester.

Annette

Hi Krystal,

We pay ours $10 an hour (undergrad, grad, post bac) or $10.61 (no longer a student/temp employee). They work 10 hours/week. This accounts for class, sessions, faculty meetings, in-service meetings and planning/prep time. At this point we do not have mentors but they would receive the same pay rate and most likely the same hours.

Krystal,

This is how I usually break it down—since the preparation for a math class does not equal the preparation needed for Microbiology.

3 hour courses:  3 hours of class, 2-3 hours of prep, 1 hour advertising, 1 hour of training per week (2 days of training mandatory before classes start) and 3 hours of SI sessions. 3+2+1+1+3=10-11 hours per week  (11 being my maximum and I should see some extraordinary work done during that week!) These maximums usually occur only during the week of a test.

4 hour courses: 3 hours of class, 3-4 hours of prep, 1 hour advertising, 1 hour of training per week, and 3 hours of SI sessions. 3+3+1+1+3=11-12 hours

Usually Microbiology, Anatomy & Physiology, and Physics seem to be the “high prep” courses.  Math courses can easily have less than 10 hours per week.

Hello,

We pay $10 an hour. The salary was negotiated through collective bargaining because the tutors, SI Leaders, and teaching assistants in the California State University system are part of a union.

SI leaders work an average of 12 hours a week.  Usually they need more prep time during their first semester of doing SI and then need less time as they gain experience.

We pay our SI Leaders $8/hour. Typically, SI Leader work between 8-12 hours per week, and are limited as student workers to a maximum of 15 hours per week. The amount of time an SI Leader puts in varies week to week, depending on the amount of prep time they require, additional session hours before exams, and so on. We are not able to increase their pay for experience, but as a two-year college we are rarely able to keep an SI Leader for longer than two semesters.

Subject: SI Leader Salary

Hi Colleagues:

We are trying to determine if our SI leader salary is “on par” with other universities. Could you please let me know how much your leaders are paid per hr. and for how many hours per week? If you pay students on a scale how do you determine that rate? Do graduate students earn more than undergrads? If you have mentor leaders, how much are they paid?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Hi all – attached is a copy of the syllabus for the class that we do for our SI Program (we call it Guided Study Sessions) here at the University of Maryland.

Interesting…I’ve had several of my calculus SI leaders say they need more time to prepare because the homework assignments take longer to complete, but the sciences seem to get it all done without a problem...history SILs just say the reading takes a long time. Thanks for the insight! Very helpful!

I highly recommend a credit-bearing course as the main method for training. I've attached the syllabus from my institution. All prospective peer educators (SI leaders, tutors, workshop leaders) take the same course as a prerequisite for their job. The one credit provides flexibility so that I can schedule class sessions around my availability and the peer educators' availability. (I set up the course as a hybrid, with online reading and assignments and face-to-face weekly classes, usually a 5-week duration.)
