Good Morning,

This year we instituted 2 hours of drop-in per week for each SI leader.  Attendance has been low.  Is there anyone who has drop-in hours for their SI leaders?  What is your experience with drop-in hours?  Is there good attendance?  When is a good time to schedule drop-in hours?  I would appreciate any feedback/adviceJ

Sincerely,

Susan Aube

Subject: Scheduling Sessions Immediately Before/After Class

Hi all,

As we continue to work through a low-attendance problem this semester, we're looking into reasons why our numbers are down. One reason could be due to our session timings.

At the beginning of the semester, we distribute class surveys asking, among other things, when students would be available to come to SI sessions. From there, we tabulate the results and give the SI Leaders all available times (ranked in order of student majority) and ask that they pick three. Most of these times, however, are not in close proximity to that session's class meeting time, and many are not even on the same day. From reading here and speaking to my counterparts at other universities, some programs have seen success from scheduling sessions within a 2-hour window either before or after the class that that session supports.

Has anyone had any experience with this sort of schedule? If so, what was needed to implement it and what challenges did you face?

Alternatively, how else does everyone schedule sessions?

Thank you,

Bill

All of our leaders have one "office hour" per week, where they make themselves available for students who are not able to attend their regular session and/or who need more one-on-one help. Attendance varies from leader to leader and session to session, just as it does in their regular session times, but in general the leaders who get more attendance in their sessions also get more attendance during their office hours. Sometimes leaders will get 4 or 5 students and they will conduct their office hour just like a session! Other times they will spend their whole hour planning their sessions because they have no students seeking help. Our office hours are conducted during "normal business hours" (8 am to 5 pm), while our regular sessions are in the evening (4:30 pm to 8:30 pm). It seems like the leaders with their office hours around late morning/early afternoon get the most visits, but there isn't a tremendous difference with regard to time of day.

We also have a few really dedicated leaders who will occasionally set up times to meet with students outside of their normal office hour or session times, but that is solely on a volunteer basis.

Hope that helps!

Hi Shannon,

Our SI Leaders' only scheduled hours are their review sessions (3 per week) and their lecture attendance. A few do also meet with students outside of their scheduled review sessions, but we really only see this for the particularly large class sections (for us, business accounting and occasionally chemistry). The Leaders are paid for these "off-schedule" meetings as well, provided that they tell us they're occurring.

Thanks,

Bill
