Good morning, all!

I hope everyone’s semesters are wrapping up nicely.

The Center for Student Learning at the College of Charleston is considering hosting some sort of “info session” on employment opportunities within our Center. We’d like to host in the spring for fall employment. Our general idea was to host something where we present the different employment opportunities we have and then give students an opportunity to apply on the spot. Some ideas we’ve thrown around are an open house event in our Center or tabling events across campus over the course of a few days.

Those of you who have hosted employment opportunity sessions, would you be willing to share your format and content?

Thanks in advance!

Best,

Hi Kait,

We have done this in a few different ways. This semester, we set up tables with a large sign in key locations on campus to promote that we were hiring and handed out cards that included key position information and a QR code to the online job descriptions and application. We staffed each table with 1-2 student employees to get students' attention and answer questions.

In the past, we held more formal interest meetings and offered three time options over the course of a week, typically a week or so before our application deadline. At each meeting, we had one professional staff member and 1-2 student employees from each of our two main peer-to-peer programs (PASS/SI and individual tutoring). We would begin the meetings with the professional staff showing our recruitment video and giving a brief overview of the positions, then have some pre-determined questions that we would have our PASS leaders/tutors answer, then open it up for students to ask any questions they have. We had printed copies of our job descriptions that included information about how to apply online.

Questions for PASS leaders/tutors:
  • Intro with name, position, how long you’ve been working with the SSC

  • Describe what a regular session looks like

  • What is your favorite SSC memory / what is your favorite part of your job?

  • What do you wish you had known when you were starting out?

  • What advice would you give to a new PASS leader or tutor?

I hope that helps!
Kristen
