Good afternoon everyone:
I am new to my role supervising my Department’s SI program. In talking with some leaders, it appears that they have been routinely responding to student emails for additional assistance/clarification. This seems to be facilitating the Dependency Cycle that
SI aims to break. How are you training your leaders on how to respond to student emails or student questions outside of the session?
Many thanks in advance for your collective wisdom.
Happy Holidays to all.

We have been seeing this on our campus as well, especially since the pandemic first hit. On one hand, we want the Leaders to be responsive, supportive, and empathetic. On the other hand, attendance at the group sessions is generally down and individual outreach/emails is up. Our theory is that students in general want help ‘on demand’ and don’t want to wait for a structured, scheduled session. We had some success when one Leader said she was getting peppered with emails the night before an assignment was due, so I suggested she tell the group she’d be available from 7:30-8:30 remotely – essentially offering an additional session - but that after that, she’d be focusing on her own priorities. Boundaries seem to be a bigger and bigger issue. I’ve also cautioned them, when hiring, to think twice about giving out their cell phones for this same reason.
Happy Holidays!
