We’ve been chatting about dress codes for our tutors and SI Leaders. Does anyone have a dress code or guidelines they would like to share?

Ā

Thank you!

At Bethune College, York University, we ask Peer Tutors to wear red-coloured, velcroed armbands with the following printed in white: "Peer Tutors", and next to it our emblem. It is easier than a T-shirt, and they place it around their arms during their shifts. It has worked very well.

For PASS Leaders, we do not have a dress code.

Annette,

Ā

We ask for tutors and SIL’s to refrain from wearing ā€œshortā€ shorts and skirts, as well as low cut or sleeveless shirts. One semester, we had a problem with tutors wearing toboggans during working hours in the winter. It became a contest of who could wear the most ridiculous toboggan. We had to ask for them to stop doing that as well. Other than that, we don’t mind what they wear.

Hi Annette,

Ā

We avoid having a dress code because, as peers, they should be allowed to look and dress like students. It helps other students feel more comfortable in their sessions.

Ā

We’ve never had problems with leaders dressing inappropriately, but it’s usually -20 degrees Celsius, so inappropriate clothing isn’t usually an issue anyways. Ā

Kind regards,

At St. Louis Community College at Forest Park Campus our tutors were a blue vest with sliver writing that reads Peer tutor. SI leaders were a gray vest with blue writing that reads SI leader and of course the professional tutors have name badges.

I buy into the idea that they should look and dress like students. We shoot for informal—not the Library, but also not the Student Union—and only have a few simple rules:

Ā

Dress Code

Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  Males:Ā  no tank tops.Ā  Footwear (Shoes/Sandals, etc.) must be worn at all times.Ā Ā

Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  Females:Ā  no low cut tops or excessively short skirts or shorts.Ā  Footwear (Shoes/Sandals, etc.) must be worn at all times. You will be asked to wear a sweater or shirt or asked to leave if you arrive for work underdressed.

Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  Both: underwear showing will not be tolerated. You will be asked to leave for the day if you cannot keep your underwear hidden.Ā

Why have a separate dress code for males than for females? Would you object to a male tutor who comes to work wearing ā€œexcessively shortā€ shorts? Why is it okay for a female to wear a tank top (as long as it is not low cut), but not so for a male? And, for the even more interesting question, what if you have a tutor who likes to crossdress or who is transitioning to a different gender? Would that be unacceptable? I invite you to find ways to rewrite your dress code that are less gender specific (and gender-normative).

Hello, all:

We don't have a dress code.Ā  During training we talk a lot about the how's and why's of creating a welcoming, inclusive environment in which all people can learn.Ā  I tell tutors my true story of working with a grad student who showed up to work wearing a t-shirt with a really offensive slogan and ask them to imagine how a student entering the space might feel about asking that person for assistance.Ā Ā  I also talk about what brain science has to say about the effect of stress on the ability to process new information and access memories.Ā  This term, I've had to talk to one of our tutors who was reluctant to give up her practice of working in bare feet.Ā  I think I've finally convinced her that some people are grossed out or culturally offended by bare feet.Ā  Beyond that, we really haven't had any issues.

Cheers,
Kathy
