Hello SI Colleagues,

Our institution is moving from Blackboard to Canvas. In Blackboard, faculty have been able to add the SI leader to the class in an auditor type role. That role gave our leaders access to course materials, but not the gradebook.

As of now, faculty do not have the ability to add roles in Canvas. The person who grants access may not be at the department level, but at the college level. It has taken us a while to figure out who has that ability.

I’d love to learn more about your process for getting leaders into courses in Canvas:  what role have your leaders been assigned and with whom do you work to get them into the course?

Thanks, in advance, for your guidance and advice.

Hi Kathleen,

We have faculty send a request to the college-level Canvas admin to add SI leaders to Canvas. That admin has created a role called "SI Leader" with necessary permissions, such as managing announcements, the calendar, and files.

Best,

We work with our IT staff to get leaders added manually at the beginning of the semester. It typically takes about 2 weeks to get everyone added, but it ensures leaders are not accidently able to see the gradebook which causes FERPA issues.  Our IT staff have created a hybrid role which I believe is based off the Student role but has capabilities to email the entire class.  However, this role adds the peer leaders to the instructor's gradebook, which some did not appreciate.

We attempted to address the issue of leaders appearing in the gradebook by creating a different hybrid role based on "Designer".  However, we have found that this level of permissions allowed our leaders to see files and Canvas test questions that students could not see.  I would highly recommend you work with your Canvas IT folks closely to test out options as much as possible to see what will work best for your program.

Our IT department created an SI Leader role that allows our leaders to have access to making announcements and maintaining their own modules while not impacting grades or having the same full access of a teacher. We do training around what is and is not permitted.
