Hi Everyone!

I am having a tough time this semester with SI Leaders not redirecting as much as I’d like.  We cover this in training, but was wondering if anyone can share activities or on-going training they have used to help with redirecting.  Anything would be appreciated.

Thank you!

April,

My favorite activity to practice redirection is to practice the Question Game. It is an improvisation game. You essentially are only allowed to speak in questions. You cannot use statements and you cannot repeat the previous question (because it becomes repetitive). Technically another improv rule is to always say yes to the situation, but they have not advanced that far in their impov skills to get there. (They do not really use the physical aspect of improv either) We often follow-up the game with a discussion saying where we can redirect to, how to include that in the questions, where to draw the line with redirecting, and how to recognize the need to shift away from that in certain circumstances.

I strongly recommend playing this game in advance with someone to get comfortable with the game and practice with someone who will help model it with the group. I often find myself encouraging leaders to practice this game at home if redirecting questions is a weakness.

I have my tutors break into groups of three. One tutor, one student, and one observer. The tutor can only tutor with questions. They have to sit on their hands so they can’t point out the problem. The observer stops the tutor when they are telling instead of asking. They have to ask everything: Why don’t you open your book? Where have you seen this before? Does this look like anything you’ve done before?

It is an extreme experience but they really learn how much they can do with questions.

Thank you,
