Good afternoon SI Professionals

I have an SI Leader who is having a hard time having her students engage in her SI Sessions. She holds her sessions over ZOOM and this semester the students have been quiet and even rarely use chat to communicate. Can you provide some techniques to improve engagement in these kinds of sessions?

Thank you

Hi Christian,

It’s so hard on zoom.

Here’s an email I wrote to my team earlier in the year:

[25/08 2:05 pm] Georgina Barratt-See

Tips for running online U:PASS

Dear leaders,

Sorry to email you again but today I’ve had 2 leaders both struggling with online classes – you are not alone!!

So I thought I’d quickly write and also link you to some previous blogposts that you might have missed.

My hot tips:

  1. Set expectations early
  2. Tell them they can turn off the camera showing their face (you can hide self view: See or Hide My Video – Zoom Support)
  3. Explain it’s helpful for you to see them – so you can see whether they’re confused or not
  4. Explain it’s hard to run a class if you can’t see them
  5. Explain they’ll concentrate better if they have to be accountable with their face showing
  6. Empathise with them that it can be hard and also share your own reluctance to build rapport
  7. Use humour and kindness
  8. Hold the silence and use the strategies here: 3 Challenges and 4 solutions for online learning - LX at UTS

Join the conversation on Teams to share any tips or commiserate 😊

Cheers,

G

Those are great suggestions on expectations. In terms of activities, I have had a lot of success with strategies like jigsaw and presentation karaoke where each team of students creates something to share with the group.

Some other great resources we've used at ACC include Google Jamboard, which is like an interactive powerpoint presentation that students can work together on. This has been a boon for digital collaboration through COVID, though I believe it is actually being sunsetted soon.

Our SILs have shown some great examples of sharing screens of different activities and worksheets, and we've seen a lot of success in Pharmacology and World Languages courses where practice and understanding of topics is key to learning. Feel free to check out our resources we use for online sessions here.

Best of luck!
