I want to know if someone bought  IPADS and/ or Tablets for the Supplementary Instruction Leaders and Supervisor. If so, what justification letter was used to buy them?

We are not currently doing SI, but a couple of years ago we purchased two iPads for our consultants and clients to use primarily as mobile login/logout terminals in our tutoring center.  They've worked out very well for us, particularly with the mobile device-optimized version of TutorTrac that we run on them.  I would think that you could make a compelling argument that iPads would be even more convenient for SI leaders to use, seeing as how sessions might be scheduled anywhere, and it would provide a handy means of getting all those students quickly logged in for each session—not to mention you would have a great mobile device that could be used in all kinds of effective ways during the session.

- advantage of sign-in purposes for TutorTrac

-Online SI sessions via Adobe Connect

-Online Textbook access

-Using different apps (free) that will enhance sessions

-Social media access to communicate and market sessions

We currently own 15 iPads and our SI leaders use it for the following purposes:

• log students in-and-out during SI Sessions
• display videos related to course content
• use specific APPS for activities/ice breakers
• take notes (directly on iPad)
  
• interact with Coordinator, SI faculty and students via Blackboard and emails
  
• and for other learning modalities through multimedia learning
  

Currently, SI leaders can only check out the iPad for a week.  We are looking forward to having one iPad assign to each SI leader.

We have purchased iPads for use with our English courses, particularly developmental English, Freshman Composition Research I, and II (2 gen ed required English courses).  English faculty can have their’s checked out for the entire semester and use it for teaching, planning, and grading.  In addition, we have 14 available for use with students in the classroom – to be checked out for the class period and returned.  It is under this that the SI’s can check out an iPad for use with students – either a single one, or a class set.  They can also check one out ahead of time to work with, but the time line is restricted (not longer than a week at a time).  Our justification involved the fact that we are trying to increase engagement and technology use within the classroom with our students.  The iPads have several apps specific for teaching English and for the SI’s, using the iPad allows them to a) work on a platform students are already familiar with because of the instruction by their professors and b) gives them additional tools and resources for working with students on skills building.

Does anyone have any recommendations for apps (preferably free or inexpensive) to use during SI or tutoring sessions? We are in the process of ordering a few iPads to use mostly for observations, but I am also looking into using them in other ways.
