Job Summary

Central Washington University is recruiting a Tutoring Coordinator to join our Learning Commons team in Ellensburg, Washington. The Role:

 

The Subject Specific Tutoring Manager position is responsible for providing leadership for the Subject Specific tutoring, aiding in developing the training curriculum, and coordinating the creation of relevant digital content for on-campus, online, and Center students. This position develops ongoing training for Subject Specific tutors using content-specific tutoring strategies that align with best practices and the Learning Commons training curriculum. Subject-specific tutoring provides one-on-one tutoring in the following areas: Psychology, Business, Accounting, Biology, Computer Science, Information Technology, Law and Justice, and the Social Sciences. This position reports to the Assistant Director for Tutoring. This position collaborates with other Learning Commons staff and campus partners to determine and meet emerging student academic support needs through outreach, program initiatives, and collaborations. All employees are expected to support CWU’s commitment to diversity and to bring and support inclusion into the university environment.

 

Job Duties

Lead Subject Specific Tutoring

- Create a pedagogically sound training curriculum based in learning theory

- Partner with the Training Manager to conduct ongoing training of peer tutors and document learning objectives for assessment

- Provide development opportunities that align with best practices for tutoring Subject Specific

- Serves as an active member of the Learning Commons team and takes part in staff meetings, team building, events, outreach, and collaborative efforts that allow the Learning Commons to function effectively as a whole

- Ensure accurate information about tutor availability is posted in the unit and online

- Collaborate with academic departments and faculty to ensure tutoring services are aligning with needs of the areas covered by program

- Model effective tutoring by taking appointments on an as-needed basis

- Manage all daily operations related to Subject Specific tutoring

 

Supervision

- Actively engage in recruitment for new student employees

- Clearly define performance expectations, ensure accountability, and provide ongoing informal feedback, coaching, and mentoring

- Conduct formal performance evaluations

- Ensure student employees have necessary resources

- Oversee and direct the work of student employees; serve as mentor, coach, and leader, and resolves complaints or issues

- Promote professional development opportunities

- Develop and fosters supportive working relationships, motivation, and engagement

- Communicate information to student staff on an ongoing basis to influence staff engagement and to be a part of a larger community

- Takes corrective action in a timely manner

- Recognize and reward student employees for good performance

- Adjust leadership style as needed to achieve results

- Value and encourage diverse perspectives, creativity, and teamwork

- Maintain tutor schedules

 

Assessment

- Complete quarterly and annual assessment of Subject Specific tutoring services to inform planning and staffing. Assessment will include running data reports within the center’s tutoring software and analyzing tutor and tutee surveys; uses reports and metrics to inform decision making

- Provide all assessment information to the Training and Assessment Manager

- In partnership with other LC staff, track and analyze learning and usage data to ensure goals are being met

 

Outreach and Communication

- Manages regular communications and materials to advertise Subject Specific tutoring services

- Facilitate interdepartmental collaborations between the unit and other student support and academic departments

- Maintain and expand the printed and digital resources collection for Subject Specific tutoring

- Coordinate with faculty and site directors at University Centers to provide increased support and virtual-friendly programming

- Collaborate with Learning Commons team to create effective and consistent marketing for all Learning Commons services.

 

Professional Development & Ongoing Training

- Participate in organized, professionally affiliated trainings/conference, such as CRLA or other relevant organizations

- Research and review content related to best practices in tutoring programs and strategies, with focus in the fields where Subject Specific Tutoring provides services, and content related to developing as a mentor, leader, and coach to student employees

 

- Other Duties as Assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field associated with teaching, education, or area related to tutoring subjects coordinated by this position.

One year of experience working in or supervising programs for tutoring, peer education, mentoring, advising, or coaching. 

Supervisory experience or experience leading teams/projects

Demonstrated ability and/or experience working with students and/or co-workers from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds and experiences.

OR applicable combination of education and/or experience, which demonstrates the ability to perform the position’s essential functions.

Preferred Qualifications

 

Master’s degree in an area associated with education, student development, higher education or field associated with areas of tutoring coordinated by position

Experience creating and providing training opportunities for student employees

Experience conducting assessment and using data to inform decision making

Demonstrated knowledge of learning center best practices and pedagogy

Experience or interest in mentoring students from a variety of backgrounds

Ability to incorporate multicultural perspectives and issues into everyday conversations

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

Salary: $40,333 - $48,400 annually

 

Schedule/Appointment: Monday - Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm (1 hour lunch)

 

 

 

Working Conditions: Work is performed in an in-person, indoor office setting with frequent in-person interactions. It is essential to be able to remain at a desk/computer workstation for prolonged periods of time, perform extensive data entry and other computer-related tasks and create/maintain filing systems for departmental records. Some evening or weekend work and/or occasional travel may be required.
