Hello S.I. partners,

I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying Summer! My name is Francesca and I am the SI Program Director at San Jose State University. I just wrapped up my first semester as a director, certainly learning a lot! As we've begun to pull data we've noticed a fairly high percentage of No-Show sessions (SI leader gets 0 attendance) . My question is what duties or tasks, if any, do you have SI leaders do if they experience a no-show for a session? Additionally, does your institution have a threshold on the number of no-show a SI leader can have per semester/quarter? Any insight people would be willing to share is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

HI Francesca,

When I ran my SI Program and if an SI Leader would have a no show, they would only wait for a max of 15 min before leaving for the day. During that time, if they expected that they would get a no-show they were expected/suggested to come up with ways to better incentivize their students to attend. They would come up with ideas either by offering snack at their next session if allowed in your institution. They would collaborate with the instructor on ways to offer early access to practice exams or  “SI Session Only” notes from the instructor.

Regular communication with the instructor is always key. Often  times they would also promote the sessions in their classroom to help the SI Leader garner more attendance.

Hello!
This has been something that has come up within our program as well. At this point we expect SI Leaders to stay the whole time they are expected to even if there are no students. We do this in case a student shows up late but also as a way to ensure that the SI Leader is getting paid for time they expected to work even though no students showed up, which is ultimately out of their control. If there are no students, we ask that our SILs finish any SI related work that they need to complete. If they are caught up they are able to work on their own assignments or course work as long as they are still remaining available to help any students who show up.

As for the second part of your question we do not have a threshold/limit of the number of no-show sessions our SILs can have. Our SILs can do all the work we ask of them to encourage student attendance but at the end of the day SI is voluntary so penalizing them for something they can't always fix doesn't seem fair. We do, however, use that data to assess which courses we should be directing our resources to. If students are not using the SI Leaders as a resource, they potentially don't need the help with the course or the SI model may not be the right fit for that course.

I hope this was helpful!

Good Morning Francesca,

Our leaders are required to conduct 2-3 sessions per week as part of their contract.

Whether or not they have attendance, they still need to stay for the full session as they are getting paid for this time.

There are instances where students show up after 30 minutes, simply because that’s when they could get there, so we want to make sure our sessions are accessible during the advertised and scheduled times each week.

Should an SI Leader have a no-show, it is often reported that they use this time to either plan for their next session or simply work on their own course assignments.

At the conclusion of each semester, we evaluate each class based on various data including attendance. Should the attendance data and DFW rates for a particular class not warrant a further need for SI, then the case is closed, so to speak. Should the DFW rates for this particular course still warrant a need for SI, but attendance is consistently low, we evaluate more thoroughly to determine reasons to combat it.

Specifically, we look at survey results with regards to what the most desired SI times are versus when sessions are offered, we look at which sections in a course see the lowest attendance, as well as reviewing the individual SI Leader for any possible issues. We often see a correlation between higher attendance and the engagement of, and approachability and attitude of the SI Leader.

As Christian mentioned, working with the SI Leaders to collaborate more with the instructors to help boost attendance is important, and there are also incentivized options you can use in an attempt to boost attendance as well.

I hope this helps?

Best Regards,

Hi Francesca

We expect our SI Leaders to stay in the venue for at least 30 minutes.  If we have no-shows for more than two weeks, we collaborate with the lecturer to do a quick survey.  We ask for 5 minutes of lecture time to request students to fill out a short class survey to determine the reasons for non-attendance.  Sometimes it can be scheduling clashes that are easy to fix immediately.

We ask (anonymous responses):

  • Do you know that your module has SI?
  • Do the session times suit you?
  • If you are willing to share, please tell us why you are not attending SI.

Kind regards

Hello from "over the hill" Francesca!

AT UC Santa Cruz, our tutors are unionized and any pre-scheduled work must be paid. If a tutor has a no-show, they can choose to "leave work early" and only pay themselves for waiting 15 minutes or complete a no-show assignment (we learned this from our colleagues at UC Davis). The no-show assignments are professional development assignments where tutors can reflect on their growth as peer educators using guiding questions, read and reflect on pre-selected articles about pedagogy, discover on-campus resources, and write a short report, any many other activities we have pre-selected for them.

During week 5 of the quarter, we review our utilization and targeted outreach to classes with low utilization. This sometimes increases utilization. If we see low utilization (<10), low repeat visits, we change the support type to "Small Group Tutoring" which is a sign-up-based program the next quarter. Our goal this summer is to look at no-show data and use that in assessing support type.

Folks in this thread have great ideas and I appreciate reading about the unique approach of each campus.
