Hello,

I am co-authoring an article about SI attendance, and I am looking for an article that points to average attendance rates for SI session in relation to the attendance in the target course. I have heard, anecdotally, that average attendance is around 10% (though I suspect it’s higher) of the enrollees in the target course will attend SI sessions, but can find no proof. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Michael,

Here is some data from Everett Community College:

                             Fall 2011   Winter 2012  Spring 2012    Fall 2012     Winter 2013
Biology-211                83.3%                            89%             66%             86%
Chem-121                  83.3%                            89%             66%             86$
Biology-221                68%                                                  42.2%
Biology-222                                  68.8%                                                 49%
Biology-223                                                      28.6%
Biology- 232                                 81%              62%
Pre-Alg                                                                                19%
Intermediate Alg                                                                   16.2%
Elem. Alg                                                                             47%

We also Winter Quarter 2013 ran SI in 7 sections of our Elementary Algebra here are the attendance percents for those:
100%, 92.3%, 87.8%, 83.3%, 77.8%, 74.4% and 69.4%.
Students enrolled in these classes were told attendance at 10 SI sessions during the quarter was mandatory but there weren't any consequences and they figured that out but many still came.

The Biology-211 and Chem-121 is what we call "Fast Track" as students can co-enroll in both even though Chem-121 is a pre-req for the Bio-211.  No mention of mandatory.  The Biology-22,222, and 223 is our majors bio sequence so students typically take all three in consecutive quarters.  Bio-232 is our Human Physiology course.

You can see our numbers are not just 10% but much higher.  No article but hope it helps.

SI has been offered before 2011 but this was the data that I had at hand.

Sharon

Michael,

Our attendance is not so outstanding percentage-wise since we service 13 huge, tough gateway courses (400 – 2,000 students in one course) with 22 leaders (1-3 in each course). In BIOL 110, for example, the leaders were seeing 35 – 50 students in one session.  Obviously, if we had a 30- 50 % attendance, the leaders would need to be trained in crowd management, and it wouldn’t look much like an SI session.  We are pleased with the 16% overall attendance we had last semester.  Purdue has many tutoring programs within each college.  Consequently, we look at regular attendance as a measurement.  Here’s a chart we used in our last report which compares the number of sessions attended and the grade percentages compared:

Hi there.

Our attendance rate here has been between 50% and 59% over the last three years. This reflect students who have gone at least one time. If we look at 3 or more times, the percentage goes down to 47-48%, pretty steadily.
We support 17-18 classes in Accounting, Economics, Chemistry, Physics, Applied Calculus, Statistics.

Ira
