Tutor evaluation

Hello,

I’m wondering how tutors are evaluated at other labs. Group tutoring and SI sessions lend the option of sitting in sessions, but one-on-one tutoring presents a challenge. Are there any lab mangers out there who use an evaluation tool or process for tutors? Does anyone observe a tutoring session?

Hi there.

I and the GA observe them at least once per semester. I also have tutors do peer observations. We all fill out the same form. I then meet with the tutors and discuss the observations. It has worked well until now.

Hi, all:

Here our Writing Center, we ask students to complete a short survey/evaluation at the end of every single session they have with a tutor. The half-sheet-sized form asks:

What did you learn today?
Would you return to work with the same tutor? Why or why not?

We don't ask for the student's name, but just the date,time, and name of the tutor. Students are directed to place their form in a locked wooden box that has a slot on the top. Our student worker records all of these handwritten comments on an Excel spreadsheet, after which the tutors get the evaluations via campus mail.

We try to conduct regular observations of every tutor on staff. We use an evaluative form, and the tutor completes a self-reflection form (both attached). We then get together for a debriefing. The observations are conducted by myself, our assistant director, and our two student supervisors, though we are just beginning to get some of our other most experienced tutors involved in conducting the observations. I say “try” because in spite of our best efforts, it is logistically all but impossible for us to observe more than a fraction of our large staff (hence the impetus behind getting more people trained to do the observations).
