Hi,

I’ve spent a while trying to find some literature on the management of PASS/SI (from the coordinator/manager’s perspective) and haven’t found anything yet. Does anyone know of some good literature/examples of good practice out there in the academic journal world?

Thanks so much!

Georgina

Hi Kabelo,

I used to run SI at MEDUNSA, but don’t know if it is still running. I know that the NMMU in PE has a very strong SI programme that has been running successfully for many years.

All the best,

HI Kabelo,

You might be able to do an MA at NMMU in Education and do your thesis on SI. Alternatively try the structured Masters at the University of Stellenbosch in Higher Education; 10 papers plus a thesis. It gives a very good grounding in many aspects of education and you can focus on collaborative learning in your thesis.

Hi Georgina,

At UTAS we are currently working (with UOW, Otago, Monash and Curtin unis) on an OLT-funded grant focussed on building capacity for student leadership development in higher education and we found a similar gap in relation to student/peer leadership programs when we did our lit review. As part of the project, we will be developing case study exemplars of good practice in the student/peer leadership development space, as well as an overarching framework of the elements that need to be considered in planning for and reviewing programs [of which the management and strategic oversight is certainly an aspect]. The conceptual framework will be published over the coming year; and case studies will also be published in a special issue of the Australasian Journal of Peer Learning. We anticipate that these case studies will be primarily written by program coordinators (some of whom are likely to be PASS/SI coordinators), so we’re hoping that this will contribute to addressing the gap in the academic journal world. However, this is not going to happen until next year, which is not much use to you now! In the meantime, a resource that you might find useful is Arendale’s Annotated Bibliography 2015 of Post-Secondary Peer Cooperative Learning Programs at http://z.umn.edu/peerbib .

An overview of the project is below for your information, in case you are interested in following our progress; we will be at this years’ STARS and HERDSA conferences running workshops and would be very happy for anyone who is interested in discussing this area further, or considering contributing a case study to get in touch; we will be launching a website over the coming weeks.

All the best

The Developing Student Leadership project contributes to building the capacity of Australasian universities to maximise leadership development opportunities for students and optimise the outcomes of student and peer-led programs. The project will provide a framework to enable better informed strategic decision-making in relation to student leadership.

An open educational resource will be developed that includes:

·        A guided reflection tool for program coordinators to improve planning and review of student and peer-led programs

·        Supporting resource materials to optimise  program outcomes

·        Good practice case studies

The framework will enhance program coordinators’ ability to:

·        build institutional capacity for student leadership development

·        embed evidence-informed evaluation in practice

·        position programs strategically to promote sustainability.

To find out more about how to be involved, please contact either

·         Project Leader, Associate Professor Jane Skalicky at jane.s...@utas.edu.au , or

Hi Georgina,

I am currently enrolled in a master's program at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY for College Student Personal Administration (Student Affairs/Higher Education) and am looking to also write a thesis this upcoming year focusing on SI.

I would highly recommend the program in general, but more specifically to you because you can gear a lot of your projects around the Student Affairs interest, in this case, supplemental instruction, for your core classes. It is a two-year, cohort program.

Hope this helps! :)
