Earlier this year, we awarded our first two SHPE Sacramento Scholarships.  The two deserving students will be entering school very soon and putting the scholarship to great use as they pursue their engineering degrees.  You can make a difference all year long by visiting the SHPE Sacramento webpage at www.sacramento-shpe.org to make a contribution to the SHPE Sacramento Scholarship Fund.  Thank you for your support!

*This month we're featuring one of our inaugural scholarship recipients, Alejandra Aguilar, a Biomedical Engineering major at University of the Pacific (UOP), in Stockton, California.  Below, Alejandra, in her own words, shares her insight on being a Latina pursuing a career in engineering, her transition to college life, the role SHPE has played at UOP, etc.

"I came to the University of the Pacific in the Fall of 2008 as a freshman full of mixed emotions but I was ready to experience college and a sense of freedom. The transition to college was not quite as easy I had imagined because I was trying to get accustomed to the new pressures and demands at UOP.  I knew I would have to study much harder and longer hours than I did in high school. Also, because I am a Latina majoring in engineering, that sometimes made me feel unfitted to my major as a result of not knowing many other Latina engineer majors like myself.

When the current Fall semester began, it was obvious that I was one of the few females in my math and engineering classes, not to mention the only Latina. It has felt a bit intimidating at times being around so many males, many of whom are Caucasion.

I became involved with our Pacific SHPE student chapter at the beginning of my freshman year and until now the majority of the members were juniors and seniors; I was the youngest member in the group. Now, four of them are pursuing master degrees in engineering at Pacific [UOP]. I always knew I wanted to pursue a masters, but actually knowing them and receiving their encouragement reinforced my decision to apply to grad school last spring. This week I received my acceptance letter to the graduate program and I will begin in the summer of 2011. If I had not become invovled with SHPE, I believe it would've been more difficult for me to meet the 'older' SHPE students and I wouldn't have known that some of them were pursuing graduate degrees. Our SHPE familia on campus has had an amazing influence on me and I know that they will all go on to accomplish great things in their engineering fields.

Being selected as a recipient for the first ever SHPE Sacramento scholarship was an honor for me, and as we all know, any scholarship received by any student helps a lot with the rising costs of higher education.  I offer my sincerest thanks to SHPE Sacramento Professionals for your generosity.  I hope one day in the near future, I’ll be able to help engineering-bound students as you have helped me."
