Is anyone running it? Our videos are Flash 7 which Gnash should support so I'd always assumed it would work...
Cheers,
Ian.

I just purged adobe flash from my system to test, and unfortunately it
doesn't play with the gnash that you get in the current stable version of
Ubuntu.
In the current development version of Ubuntu (Hardy / 8.04) gnash also can't
play it but gets a little further by loading the jw flash video player
plugin.
Interestingly in Hardy gnash there is a "properites" option which claims the
format is "SWF8".
Cheers,
Al.
I guess this is an issue with the jw player - we specifically state Flash 7 in the calling html and we encode using the Flash 7 format (so I don't know why it thinks it is SWF8). The old Adobe Linux player was only for Flash 7 and that worked just fine.
I'm contemplating buying a new, more powerful machine. With that I can run virtual instances of os' and I could expand my testing scenarios to include gnash. That'll have to wait for a while though.
I'm much obliged to you for taking the time to check! We can correctly state this in the FAQ now.
Ian.
It's not just the freedom fanatics. Flash isn't available on all
platforms, such as 64-bit Linux. I appreciate with some frigging you can
get flash working in a 32-bit browser under a 64-bit OS, but that's a
bit nasty.

Plus you could also write in the FAQ that it's possible to download
the .flv files and play them using mplayer locally. Also not optimal,
but it is a solution.

Al.
No worries. I spoke to the lead developer for gnash about 6 months ago
at the last Ubuntu Developer Summit, and will probably see him again at
the next one in Prague next month. He said he does get a fair number of
requests to support the jw player because it's really heavily used on
lots of "coke and mentos" movie sites, and of course more reputable
sites such as showmedo ;)

In the mean time feel free to ping me with any tests you want done. I
run various versions of Ubuntu on numerous machines and many VMs, so can
probably test stuff in various environments.
Also worth noting that browsershots lets you take screengrabs of sites
in loads of different browsers with and without flash.
There is sometimes a queue as there can be times when lots of people
request screenshots and the "factories" are busy working through them.
If you subscribe and pay you can jump the queue.
Note: I run a bunch of factories so I get a slice of revenue if you
pay :) I get nowt if you don't :(

No probs, anytime.
Cheers,
Al.
Between kyran's powerhouse (4 darn cores he's got compared to my poor little older box!) and my soon-to-buy bigger box we should be able to run all the configs we need. Of course, it'd be nicer if html 'just worked', but then life might be too easy.
Re. gnash - it would be nice to properly support it but if it is definitely a gnash problem then fair enough, we'll just have to wait for them to catch up. I don't think forfeiting a good player just to support gnash makes any kind of sense. The new FAQ (to go up in a few days) will address this.
Much obliged,
Ian.
