So a big revamp over the previous version or a Chrome response?

With support for HTML 5 and open video formats, I wonder if ShowMeDo
will be using it instead of the proprietary Flash.

Given that ogg video doesn't offer any size/performance benefit over the current Flash video (ogg's codec might be a bit more advanced than the Sorenson 3 in Flash 7 FLV files, but not much), I don't see that there's any benefit to supporting a 2nd video format.  We'd have to support two formats as most people (about 95% I'd estimate) using ShowMeDo won't have Firefox 3 this summer (and many more for longer)...since Kyran is the only 100% person on ShowMeDo, increasing the support burden is something we want to avoid.

That said, once Firefox 3 is more widely accepted and the site's grown a bit more, it would be nice to support a full FOSS video solution.  We'll keep an eye on things.

Hiyas,

I've been watching the HTML5 developments with interest. I think some
of the recently touted chrome demos are very cool (most work pretty ok
on my Firefox too), and people are already getting very creative with
the spec. Embracing open-video formats and using the new <tags> (image
and svgs excites me the most at the moment) is a definite intention.
But, as ever, Microsoft aren't playing ball, which means a good chunk
of Showmedo's audience according to our stats. Now I'm quite prepared
to discount IE6, and already have, but abandoning IE altogether isn't
an option; too many people, particularly newbies, are tethered. The
alternative is to have dual-support, but given currently available
man-hours this isn't the best use of my time I think, aside from being
soul-destroying ;) So as and when finances allow an expanding
workforce etc., I would love to be at the vanguard of sites embracing
the new standards, especially video obviously.

cheers,
Kyran
