To enable Multi-chassis EtherChannel (MEC) on Cisco Nexus data center switches, the only option left for you is to enable Virtual PortChannel (vPC).

Virtual PortChannel is not that easy for people to configure correctly by hand. Even In this “Quick” vPC Configuration Guide, we still have to do 8 long steps before we have some working vPCs. A little bit frustrating when we look at it for the first time.

Here I just want to point out one aspect to make you feel better about vPC.


For every pair of vPC providing switches, we do have to go through all first 7 steps. But to provide new user vPC objects, we only have to repeat Step 8!



In other words, Step 1 to Step 7 is only one-time work. Step 8 is for every new vPC object

For example, if we have 100 vPCs to configure, all we have to do is Step 1 to Step 7 once, and repeat Step 8 for 100 times.

So the whole configuration steps can be organized in this way:

[One time work]

Step 1: enter configuration mode.
Step 2: Enable feature vpc and feature lacp.
Step 3: Create (the only) vPC domain and enter it.
Step 4: Create Peer-Keepalive Link.
Step 5: (Optional) Adjust LACP system priority to win control of LACP protocol over vPC user switch or server. The lower system priority side wins. This is only necessary when the number of member ports is larger than 8.
Step 6: (Optional) Adjust Role priority to choose which one in the vPC pair to be the primary switch (the lower one wins the primary role)
Step 7: Create (the only) Peer Link.

[Repeat for every user vPC object]

Step 8: Define user-facing local PortChannel object and bind them with vpc ID number.
