Laura Altshul is a long-time educator [kindergarten to college] who has been writing essays and short stories and turned to poetry three years ago, inspired by her husband's enthusiasm for the genre. One of her poems won an honorable mention in the 2013 Connecticut Poetry Contest.
Victor Altshul has been practicing psychiatry for over fifty years. He writes, “I was an English major in college. I liked poetry, but didn't understand most of it. I didn't think I was smart enough to be an English teacher, so I went to medical school and became a psychiatrist.”
A few tears ago, a lecture on Elizabeth Bishop's famous villanelle, "One Art" made Victor wonder if he “might be able write beautiful things too- even now I would hesitate to make that claim.” His book of forty poems, entitled "Stumblings," was published two years ago. The title refers to his “uncertain passage into old age. He writes, “I will have turned eighty by the Institute reading.” The title also refers to “the progressively deteriorating gait of my best friend, who had been stricken with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease).” Victor’s second book, "Singing with Starlings," is being published later this year.
On the third Thursday of each month, The Poetry Institute Poetry Series celebrates an eclectic mix of poetic voices. Free. Refreshments. (And participants are invited to bring something to share.) Open mic. Outstanding featured readers. In a casual setting. Open to all members of the public (and even others).
