Expensive, beautifully made piece of !@##$$
By BeeRanch
Myerchin claims to have made the "Ultimate" rigging knife. I received the knife undamaged and in a timely manner. The knife feels solid and appears to be well made.
Here is the problems with the knife.
1. The blade is loose when closed and will partially open. This makes the knife unsafe to carry in your pocket or clipped to your belt.
2. The blade does not lock in the open position. This makes it unsafe to use as a knife.
If I thought that this was a one time manufacturing defect I would have exchanged it for another knife. Apparently blade locking springs are not what Myerchin does very well ( see buyer reviews on Myerchin Navigator LightKnife ).
I am returning the knife to Amazon and Outdoor Merchants for a refund. I am not sure why I should have to pay to ship this junk back.
UPDATE 11\15\2011:
I have received a full refund from Outdoor Merchants, including return shipping. While I remain disappointed in Meyerchin I am pleased that Outdoor Merchants promptly and fully refunded my returned purchase.

An exceptionally high quality knife and a great value for the price
By K. Wachs
I had been looking to replace my dad's old rigging knife that was sold (accidentally!) along with his Alberg 30 about 4 years ago. He had bought it with his first Lightning in about 1958.
I looked at knives just about everywhere I could: West Marine in Northeast MD, Belk's Marine in Holmes PA, L.L. Bean in Freeport ME, and on-line at Amazon (of course).
Last year, my wife surprised me with a Myerchin BF300 Captain as a gift on Father's Day (I may have inadvertently left a picture sitting on the kitchen table ;-)
As soon as I picked the knife up, I knew it was what I had been looking for. The materials, craftsmanship and overall quality are in a different class than other rigging knives I had seen. A superior tool. Professional, heirloom-quality construction and made to last several lifetimes.
I would recommend the BF300 to anyone who wants a hard working rigging knife, built with superior workmanship and uncompromising quality.
BTW - A previous review claimed that the blade is loose, and does not lock in either the open or closed positions. Nothing could be less true in my experience. On my knife, both the movements and locking mechanisms of the blade and spike are rock solid. When open, it feels like a fixed-blade knife. And when closed, it stays put.

Left-handed setup
By Guy Smiley!
Pretty cool knife. I ordered the old model because it was on sale, and selected the titanium one for like a third of retail. What arrived was the brand new model, which is great...Then I noticed the arrangement of the pocket clip. It is decidedly Left-handed. For a lefty, this is a great tool! I love the fact that both the knife blade and the marlin spike can be opened and closed using only one hand.
The down side for me is that I'm right-handed when it comes to knives. If Myerchin would change the clip to be ambidextrous, to attach to either side effectively, I would happily give this product all 5 stars that it deserves.
