My client sells a digital product, and would like to add a
subscription based product, essentially access to a "Member's Area" on
a Drupal site.

I was considering creating a Shopify App to enable this, using the
Stripe API which handles subscriptions. However, given my initial
research into the Shopify API, this seems infeasible. Essentially,
the API does not seem to support any functionality in the placing of
orders, which I suppose is reasonable, given the difficulty of
managing subscriptions.

Would you agree that this is true? Can anyone think of a way that this
could be handled in Shopify? Obviously it is not that difficult to
handle the subscription from the Drupal site, but it would be good if
we could sell the Member's Area subscriptions side by side with the
Shopify products.

I guess the problem is that your customer already have(or planning to have) normal(typical products, more or less) shopify store and wanted to sell subscriptions there, right?

Hi Bobz,

You're correct, selling recurring subscriptions over Shopify isn't supported right now. Your best bet is to sell set-period subscriptions (e.g. buy 1 year or 6 months at a time) that have to be re-ordered when they expire. It's not perfect by any stretch but it's the best we can do with the current setup.
