use custom API with shopify to get and post data

I created an account on shopify.in and now have the access to admin area.

But how do I integrate custom api with shopify?

What if I have an API with all the products and I need data from that api be rendered in shopify list of products page?

Also, I do not see any coding area here. How can I customize it?

I am just starting. Can you please point me to an example so that I can know how exactly shopify apps are developed?
