The 2009 British Open Shogi Championships will be
held on May 2nd/3rd (saturday/sunday) at Trinity College Cambridge
There will be 6 rounds (3 each day) at a
time limit of 40 minutes plus 40 seconds for each move
thereafter. Everybody plays in each round (unless there are an odd number
of players) and there will be no handicaps. The games will start at 10:00
each day with an expected finish around 17:00. If the last round finishes
early (as last year) there will be an optional blitz tournament after the main
event.
The entry fee is £10 or 10 euros. All entry fees
will be refunded as prizes. There will also be trophies for the British Open
Shogi Champion, the British Shogi Champion (the highest placed player with a
British passport) and the British Kyu-class Shogi Champion (the highest
placed non-Dan-rated player with a British passport).
The British Shogi Champion will also win an
expenses-paid (flight plus hotel room) trip to New York in November 2009 to
represent Great Britain in an international shogi tournament. Yes, not a bad
prize!
The facilities at Trinity College (right in the
centre of Cambridge) are excellent, but small, so there is a limit on the number
of players (30). Please therefore enter as soon as possible to avoid
disapointment.
You can enter by sending me an email
(david....@sky.com) or by writing to me (Flat 1, Stone House, North Foreland
Road, Broadstairs, CT10 3NT). Please send no money as the entry fees will be
collected at the tournament.
If you have any questions, please use the
same email and postal addresses.
Many thanks for your attention. If you know of
anyone else who might like to play, then please pass on this "call for
entries" to them.
Looking forward to a flood of
entries,
David Faldon
President, British Shogi Federation
