Hello Shogi-L members,

I have a quick question from a fellow shogi player.
He would like to join our group, but he has never been accepted as a member.
Do we have some active managers or is it lost cause?

Best regards,
Karolina Fortin

Hi, on the group config page; https://groups.google.com/g/shogi-l/about, it sais that Pieter Stouten is the owner, and only manager.

If the joining to the group (list) have been restricted to be aproved by an admin, He is the only one can do.

Hello Shogi fans,

There are no restrictions, other than that an applicant must give a meaningful reason for wanting to join. I use that as a poor man's filter to ensure that members are really interested in Shogi.

Karolina is right in supposing that I am not a very active list manager. The problem is that I don't get informed when someone has applied for membership. Either that is not possible or I am not clever enough to figure out how to do that.

Either way, it would be good to have an additional manager. If anyone is interested, please send me a private mail (sto...@shogi.net).

A bigger issue is that nowadays SHOGI-L receives very few posts, maybe due to the existence of other, more popular, groups. So, I am wondering if SHOGI-L still has a reason to exist. Please share your views. Thanks.

All the best,

Pieter

Hello Pieter,

I definitely think there's still value in having this group active. I would not be surprised if we'd learn that there are members of this community that do not follow any other shogi community. So if possible, let's keep it alive :-)

Kind regards,
Lukas Vyletel

Hello Pieter,

Thank you very much for the invite. Speaking for myself, a couple years ago when I started playing, Shogi-L was one of the only clues I could find online about American shogi and its history of tournaments. While there are now several online communities, I still think this is a valuable, public newsletter for those who aren't online as much.

I've been a member for a very long time. I've moved around the US always looking for a group to play with and since I come up dry all the time, I enjoyed the postings here. This is the only group I know of so I'd hate to see it go away. Now being based in San Antonio, TX, still no known group here.

@livegr...@gmail.com I know there's a group in Rio Grande Vista in Texas, but might be rather far. I've been adding any groups I know of to https://shogiusa.com/clubs.html

Please let me know if you'd like me to add San Antonio, even if you just have a club of one for now.

Interesting to know a bit about the States Shogi scene.

Yep, I concur, is mostly the same for many of us. Apart from playing online... 981dojo, Lishogi, Shogidojo, ... or by Mobile app.

What do you think you will need to make there a lively "in-person" Shogi Club /community?

Cheers.
Shiger.

Hello shogi friends, hello Pieter,

This list has a long history and, even if not used that often, keeps to facilitate exchange from time to time among the international shogi community.

Indeed new ways of communication may have replaced partially the use fo this list but I would support the idea to keep it alive anyway.

All the best

Fabien

I'm in agreement that the history is valuable. Many of us remember when it was the only way to keep in touch beyond a local level. As many different ways as we have to keep the community available, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

Hello Shogi fans,

Thanks for all your kind words, both on this list and in private messages. It is clear that SHOGI-L still has a raison d'être.

Moreover, several people have expressed interest to help manage SHOGI-L and I will reach out to them offline. I am very grateful to them.

On a side note: I plan to go through my binders of Shogi-related documents (going back 40 years) and share scans of documents that I think may be of interest. The first one I posted was the short report on the first ever European Shogi Championship (24-26 August 1985). Would reading such documents be of interest to you?

All the best,

Pieter

Hello Pieter,
That's very interesting. Do you happen to have any photos from that time, too?
Best regards,
Andrei

Pieter,

Yes I think that seeing old documents would be very interesting. Heck, I still look through George Hodges’ Shogi magazines from time to time. Speaking of which, I seem to remember a long while back a discussion about scanning and sharing these. Did that happen? Can it?

Hello Andrei,

I think so. I must even have a photo somewhere in the NSR quarterly magazine, which shows the FESA founding fathers celebrating that event. I have tried to find that photo back forever without much luck so far. I will keep looking whenever I have some time.

All the best,

Pieter

Hello Angela,

You could try to contact Charlotte Hands, George Hodges' granddaughter, to ask if that is OK. If you are lucky, there may even be electronic versions, although I am not sure PDFs were already used for printing at that time.

Good luck!

I got in touch with George’s widow several years back and bought the complete set on CD ROM. Including “Better Moves For Better Shogi“
Everything was digitized and I have copies if Charlotte agrees

Hello all ,

Even though I don't spend a lot of time on line these days , I'm in favour of keeping the Shogi-L going.
Of course, that's dependent on anyone kind enough to put in the  required work  .
