Lance moves...

I was playing against an iPhone opponent yesterday (kakinoki shogi).
At one point I wanted to move a lance from my back row to my
opponent's back row. My understanding is that this should be a valid
move; with a compulsory promotion at the other end. However, the
computer program would not let me make the move; it indicated that I
could only move to the second last row.

I know that for a drop that would be appropriate, since the lance
needs somewhere to go in order to promote, but I was trying to move
and not dropping... There was no chance that I'd be moving into check
by making this move either.

Is there a rule I've missed somewhere? Or is this a software bug?

Hi cmaughan,

It's a legal move to move the lance to the farthest rank as long as
you promote it. This sounds like a software bug. If possible, I
would report it to the developers.

I've been looking for a shogi app to get on my I-phone.  Is this one worth getting?  It sounds like so as long as it's not too buggy.  How many games have you played against an opponent on it?
