I installed Keyman 6 and Toolbox on a new computer with Windows 7. As
before I wanted to associate certain lgs in Toolbox with a certain
Keyman keyboard (Language Properties --> Options --> Keyboards). I
have this keyboard associated in Windows associated with an input
language (Spanish is associated with the Keyman keyboard Rapa Nui/
Spanish), and indeed, the Rapa Nui/Spanish keyboard is in the list
"Keyboard" in Toolbox's "Language Encoding Properties" tab. And
indeed, the language icon on the taskbar jumps to "ES" when I move to
the relevant field in Toolbox, however, the associated Keyman keyboard
is not activated.
Does anyone have an idea what could be the problem? Maybe it's an
issue between Keyman 6 and Windows 7? For in the Keyman configuration
panel, under Languaes, there is a message "You cannot associate a
Keyman keyboard with this layout because it is an IME" (a message
which is Russian to me).
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

This sure sounds like a Keyman problem. You can contact Travoltesoft
about it.

Another option is to use the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator
(MSKLC). It is free and easy to use. I don't have Windows 7 and the
download site for MSKLC doesn't mention it, so I guess that's a bit
iffy yet, too.

Just google "MSKLC download" and chooe the Microsoft site.

For using it, I recommend doing a load of an existing keyboard and
seeing how they do things. You mention Spanish. You might even be able
to use the keyboard that comes with Windows.

Ah, I'm remembering that MSKLC is for Unicode. If you're using legacy
fonts, then it's not an option. But a Spanish-based script would be
easy to switch to Unicode.

Thanks for the idea. Unfortunately we're still using legacy fonts for
the
moment (with not only Spanish characters, but a number of characters
specific to Rapa Nui as well).
I've written to Tavultesoft, let's see what they come up with.

I have been using keyboards created with the MSKLC within Toolbox for years
and it has always worked fine.

I think you should be able to create a MSKLC keyboard for a custom
legacy font, though I haven't done it myself. You would create the
keyboard for the code points of the characters you need to use, and then
it works just like Keyman.

Dare I suggest that you consider switching the whole project to Unicode?
We found it very freeing to be able to view our language materials with
a variety of already-installed fonts... and if you ever want to post to
the web it's much easier.

MSKLC produces Unicode output. I don't know whether or not it would be
possible to restrict the MSKLC keyboard output to the U+0020..U+00FF
range and use it with a legacy font. I expect that there could be
problems with the U+0080..U+00A0 range.

I expect that using Keyman to produce legacy output or else switching to
Unicode are better options.

Sorry I didn't catch this conversation earlier! You are correct,
Keyman 6 does not work in Windows 7. Keyman Desktop 7.1 however,
does, and we have completed Microsoft certification for both Vista and
Windows 7 for Keyman Desktop Pro 7.1.
