Hello, I have a lot of texts + interlinear translation in toolbox but toolbox freezes up every time I do a search so I decided to upgrade to FLEx, but when I tried to import the file from toolbox I got the following error message:  "There was a problem with the import.  The system reported ", hexadecimal value 0x1E, is an invalid character.."  I don't know what this means or what to do.  Should I post this question to the FLEx list instead?  Or maybe someone can help with the freezing problem.  (I have Windows 7 and Toolbox 1.5.8.)

Thanks,

Ellen

I also found that Toolbox often freezes during searches in a large corpus. I get around this by not using the search function in the text corpus, but by doing a concordance search instead. (Tools > Concordance, or Ctrl+L.) This has the added advantage of creating a list of all occurrences. In order for this to work, the text corpus (whether it is one file or a collection of separate files) has to be defined as a corpus, but this is not very hard to do.

Thanks.  I do use Concordance but I don't always want to bother creating a file for every search, and sometimes I would like to view the broader context of a particular example, not just the sentence it occurs in.

If the text file is sorted by the reference, then a Right-Click on the reference in the Concordance should take you to the location. You can then examine the broader context.

I hadn't heard of the freeze problem with the Find in interlinear. The Find is a linear search and can be a bit slow sometimes, but it shouldn't freeze altogether. If you (or Paulus) could send me an example -- your project and a sample word that it freezes on -- I would appreciate it. Part of my job is chasing down bugs.

By the way, version 1.6.0 has just been released. While I don't know if it would perform any better for this problem, it might. A number of bugs have been found and squashed in the last couple years.

You originally asked a question about loading Toolbox data into Flex. I know next to nothing about Flex and don't know what the problem might be. It sounds like it was complaining about a non-Unicode charater. Is your data Unicode? I believe Flex requires it. If no one on the list knows about that message, and if you decided not to continue using Toolbox, you will have to ask on their website.

If you have the text file open during the concordance search and if the concordance file is sorted by reference, Toolbox can scroll the concordance file parallel to the text, or at least you can jump from a concordance entry to the text file to read the context. I don’t remember if I had to define a jump path or if this happens automatically, but it is a very practical option which I use all the time.

Thanks to you and Paulus for the tips on Concordance.  I think the problem with Find came up when I've tried searches with wildcards.  In any case how would I send you the whole file?  I don't think I should post it to the groups list.  Sorry, I'm a newbie to google groups.

I should have mentioned how to send me a project. Send it to Toolbox @ sil.org (without the spaces -- for privacy reasons, Google chops the middles out of email addresses if it sees them).

I should have thought of the parallel movement. Thanks to Paulus for thinking of it and mentioning it. It should not require setting up a Jump Path. The parallel movement was partly added to avoid having the complications of Jump Paths, though they are still required in some situations.
