Here is how it works ...

1. A Facebook page is created

2. It puts out a constant stream of heart wrenching, amusing or impossibly beautiful pictures (usually Photoshop enhanced), tall stories, inspirational thoughts, or simplistic requests such as "Click LIKE if you love your mother", "Click LIKE if you hate cancer", Click LIKE if you respect this wounded soldier", or the dispicable scam that has tricked thousands of gullible people "Click SHARE and $1.00 will be donated to this sick baby".

3. The page generates a big group of fans who innocently refer the page and its content to their FB friends. This builds the FB EdgeRank of the page. EdgeRank is an algorithm developed by Facebook to govern what is displayed and how high on Newsfeed.

4. Friends now Share, Like or Comment, which spreads the page further.

5. The page is in thousands of FB Newsfeeds.

Now the page creator is ready for business, selling the "Likes" identities, typically for about $200.00 per 100,000 names, to shady online vendors. Soon your Facebook Newsfeed will start to fill with unwanted content from these vendors.

So how do you avoid this scam? Well, by all means look at FB pages that display beautiful photos, inspirational quotations, or tall stories, but do not Share, Like or Comment. If you do, you may be caught in the identity trap and your name is for sale.

Some inspirational and beautiful photo FB pages may be altruistic or purely harmless egoistic projects, but how do you know? The risk is yours.
