These are the guidelines adopted by Shirley Youth Baseball and
Softball regarding the placement of players within the various levels
as defined by Cal Ripken baseball.

Shirley Youth Baseball and Softball Player Placement Guidelines
Adopted: 2/9/2011

1) Players play at the following level based on age:

Baseball Guidelines

Level Age

TBall 5, 6
Rookie 7, 8
D-1 9, 10

Majors-60 (previously Minors) 11, 12
Majors-70 (previously Majors) 11, 12


Softball Guidelines

Level Age/Grade
3rd/4th Grade Girls Third and Fourth Grade
5th/6th Grade Girls Fifth and Sixth Grade


The following are the list of exceptions to the above:

Pre-season Exception:
1) If an upper level travel team does not have enough players to field
a team of 12, the head coaches at the upper level, VP of player
development and President choose a player to move up (must be
unanimous).
2) The player and player’s parents are notified. If they agree, then
the player is moved up.
3) Continue this process until the teams are full.

In-season, Single Game Exception:
1) If a travel team is short a player during the season, the upper
level head coach identifies a lower level player, and notifies the
lower-level coach, parents, and President.
2) If the lower level coach, parents, player, and President agree, the
player plays up for a single game, then resumes season at their
current level.
