Greetings,

I have tried to deploy an application, but I was not in the right working directory. I have stopped the deployment, and terminated the application sending it from pending to archived, but is there a way to actually completely remove it?

Thank you,
Etienne

Completely removing terminated/archived applications is not supported at this time.

Sorry.

Why not? Just curious.

There is additional work on our backlog to ensure all the referenced data (e.g. uploaded bundles and various caches) from the application get cleaned up. Deleting the application without doing the work to clean up this data would leaf cruft lying around.

As a free account owner, will our Archived applications count toward the 10 free application we can host for free on ShinyApps.io?  It would be a shame if the archived apps are counted toward our 10 especially when we can't delete them from our profile.

Thanks.

No they won't count. No worries at all.

I am surprised that even now the application is going beta, there is no provision to completely delete an application. On another thread, it was suggested to me the only possibility is to overwrite the code with a dummy application.

This is a security concern for all serious users. I am a long-time follower of RStudio and love the work you do, but this is an annoying omission.

We will recommend against using shinyapps in any application with security issues.

Thanks for the feedback Dieter,
it is definitely on our list of work to do, and we recognize its importance but we felt that getting more feedback on the viability of the business behind shinyapps.io was a higher priority.  The complete implementation of delete is a little more involved and we wanted to tackle it holistically.  To be clear on what the "Security issue" risk is here is more about RStudio conceivably going to look at an application and its data.   There is no way to serve an archived app, and everything related to the application is segmented by account with strict permissioning.  It isn't clear just how prevalent the need for delete is versus some of the other missing capabilities in the platform which are more widely applicable to the larger audience.

Best,
-Tareef

Greetings,

Do you not feel that the lack of this option could impact the viability of the business?
Corporations have obligations and some include the complete destruction of certain informations. Not archiving. If they feel that shinyapps.io cannot comply with the rules they have to follow, they may not come onboard.

As others have noted, the ability to delete an app is necessary. Lack of the delete capability is a show-stopper defect for me.

Totally understood.  It is definitely a priority for us, but we need to get our service to general availability first to help us understand the viability of the business itself.

Hopefully we will be able to get to it within the next few weeks.

On a related note, if we want to do our own Shiny App hosting on a
public cloud server, what are the licensing restrictions?

If you would like to setup your own shiny server, you can deploy either our open source server, or our professional server.  The open source server is licensed under an AGPL license, while the professional server comes with a commercial license.
