Hello!

I am trying to learn how to use Shiny and wanted to replicate the example given on the main website. The app works fine locally but it doesn't work in the deployment URL, which is https://gracechang.shinyapps.io/zzzz/ . The app works fine if I do the graph adjustments on the left but crashes if I try to hover over the points. I don't see any other error besides the grayed out screen. I uploaded the original shiny app here: http://gracechang.shinyapps.io/movies-test/ and it seems to work if I hover over the points. I have attached the data and the code that I have used (along with the code that I downloaded from the Shiny gallery).

Can someone please help point me in the right direction? Or a way that I can look for the problem?

Thank you!

Best,
Grace

Grace,
Just a quick question, is your app memory intensive?  If so, you may want to upgrade the instance you are using.  You can see instructions for how to do that in the Shiny apps guide.

Hi Tareef and Chad,

Thanks for your replies! I'll definitely take a look at the memory upgrade process and try it out right now!

At the moment, I don't think that this app is memory intensive--mostly because the basically identical app loads fine on the site (it even requires a much larger dataset), but it might also be the way that I have some of the things coded.

Does a crash like this usually indicate usage of too much memory? Is there a log that I could try to look at to see how much memory my app is using or if I have something else that is broken?

Thanks so much!

Best,
Grace

Hello again!

I tried to address possible memory issues by re-configuring the app to have 4098 MB memory (overkill, but I just wanted to make sure....) but unfortunately, I still run into the same issue where hovering over the points yields an app crash.

Both my server.r and ui.r are under 100 lines each, and my data file is just 23KB so I suspect that the issue might not be memory based because my code and my data are not particularly complex. I have also included a .csv file to give easier access to the data that I am using (in case a .db file is inconvenient).

Again, I really appreciate the help and suggestions that other have given and would really welcome other directions that I could explore!

Thank you!

Best,
Grace

What version of ggvis do you have installed?
  packageVersion("ggvis")

You might need to update to version 0.3.0.1. There was an issue with version 0.3 that might be the culprit here.

Hello Winston!

I originally had 0.3.0.99 but after updating to 0.3.0.1 and redeploying, I still ran into the same hovering issue.

Thanks for your suggestion, though! It's helpful to eliminate possible sources of error.

Best,
Grace

Grace,

Could this be caused by a data issue? I can reproduce the crash running your app locally. But only certain data points cause the crash, same as when you run it on shinyapps.io.
I see in your data there are some non-ascii characters (e.g "André Ayew"). Could this be causing the crash?

Hello Fereshteh!

Thank you!! Yes, this seems to be the issue! I had no idea that the non-ascii characters could cause so much trouble. Everything seems to work fine now!

Thanks for your help! :) Thanks everyone for such fast replies!

Best,
Grace

FYI, we are working on some changes to Shiny to behave better with non-ASCII characters. These should be part of an upcoming Shiny 0.10.1 release, along with an article laying out some guidelines about how to ensure your application code and data will work well across platforms.
