intermittent 'disconnected from the server'

I realise this is a question that has been asked alot, but I have looked at the answers and still find no solution. One thing that makes the problem more complicated is that the problem is not reliably there - it only happens sometimes, more often with some customers than others. The problem is:

I have a shiny app which is working perfectly locally. Most of the time, it also works perfectly on the server. However, every now and then, when the first action is performed, the app dicsonnects from the server. I have read suggestions that this could be because the application is too large for my memory application, but on my hard drive, the entire application takes up less than 170MB, and in the admin console, I have set the size to Xlarge (2MB). Playing with the size seems to have little influence on the 'disconnected from the server' error - the error rate at smaller sizes is much the same. In addition, the memory usage in the admin console stays below 300MB.

In the 'user guide', there are many suggestions for things that could be causing the problem, but most of these would cause the error every time the application was run, rather than 5-10% of the time, so I have ruled most of these causes out as well. 

We have tried using different browsers (internet explorer, firefox, chrome), and the choice has no impact on the error rate. 

I have reduced the 'number of workers per Application Instance to 2', with no effect. The error does not seem to correlate to the number of people using the app at the same time.

Strangely enough, the one thing that seems to help every time is when the customer contacts me to ask about this error. I then try to use the app online (usually with the same error message), after which they can successfully use again. 

Any suggestions as to how I can avoid this error would be greatly appreciated.

Yep, but never directly after the customer had the problem, and the showLogs() only shows the result from the last login (or can I access older logs somehow?), which was always successful when I tried it. I will try and generate the problem again and look at the log. It is difficult to replicate the problem though - I have no idea why it occurs, might take a while...

Hi Andy,

I include the log below. I don't see anything obvious that would cause the error. There are a few versions that are listed as NA (rmarkdown version, knitr version, etc), but I don't know what affect this would have. There is also a 'browser()' still included, but this is on a tab that is never opened by the user, so I thought it should have no effect. The problem seems to occur more in firefox than in internet explorer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If the user is being disconnected, that is typically because the R process is crashing or exiting for some reason. Any errors should be written to the log. You could consider adding some debug statements to help identify where the application may be crashing.

Hi Andy,

thanks for the tip. It is not clear to me where I should add debug statements, or what these debugging statements should be looking for, because the problem is not very reproducible, it happens only occasionally and only for some users - otherwise everything runs smoothly. The messages in the log that I thought sounded suspicious are those where a version is listed as NA (see last post for log), but I am not sure how to interpret these messages. Can you tell me what specifically I should be looking for in the debugging, or what these version:NA statements in the log mean?

Hi Andy,

I have a shiny application that works perfectly locally and it's also being deployed successfully to shinyapps.io. For this application, I'm using excel datasets which are in the same folder as the app. I have some filters on this shiny application which works fine locally. But when I try to use the filters on shinyapps, it immediately says 'disconnected from server'. I have attached the logs. Please advise me on this issue. Thanks!

"DriverHome' is the dataframe created using the excel data. 

Object 'L2' is a dataframe column.

I'm not sure why this filtering is not working online. Any help would be appreciated!
