detect open dropdown / run filter only when dropdown closes

Hi all,

I have a recurring problem that with multiple choice dropdown menus where the filters run as soon as a choice is changed, but in reality a user want to make multiple selections, then have the filter run.

One potential solution is to run the filters only by manual trigger using action button but this adds another item for the user to click on for something to happen.

A better solution might be to use the validate function which only runs the filters if the dropdown is closed, as suggested in the link below. The validate part seems straightforward but how to I detect if the dropdown is open or closed?
