Hi,

I've been playing with rgl (the R OpenGL app), and have found problems with rendering the OpenGL plots in RStudio server (both Ubuntu and CentOS versions). More specifically, the RGL device that gets created appears to be "locked" or "frozen", and doesn't show the image or it's ability to manipulate with the mouse. Once you detach the rgl library from RStudio the RGL device clears. As a check, it works OK in R outside of RStudio server.

Thanks!

Hi Jules,

I'm not sure whether you're referencing Shiny or the RStudio Server. If you're trying to get rgl going in Shiny, I have a guide here: http://trestletechnology.net/2013/02/graphical-tools-rgl-on-a-headless-shiny-server/. If you're working on RStudio Server, I'm not sure how to help, but I wouldn't be optimistic about an interactive rgl model working remotely -- rgl relies on OpenGL which typically is just run on the local server.

The above guide I posted is taking advantage of RGL's ability to export a model to WebGL, which makes it accessible from a browser.

Jules, if you are indeed referring to RStudio Server then you'll want to head over to the RStudio support site instead of this group. Thanks.

Jeff,

Thank you for your reply. I was in fact initially referring to rgl with RStudio server. As Joe points out in his following message, I should take my queries to Rstudio support for this.

But your solution that combines Shiny with rgl and WebGL is very interesting! As a quick test, I was able to successfully run your 3dplot Shiny example in RStudio server and render the plot in the browser (for some reason it worked with Firefox, but not Chrome...). I will try your example with Shiny server next.

Thanks!
