Looking at my logs I see this:

2015-01-19T17:15:05.195954+00:00 shinyapps[shuttle]: Error in tolower(x) : invalid multibyte string 771

Any ideas what might be going on?

I ran into the same problem and I fixed it by downloading the latest (stable) version of data.table - 1.9.4

Hi, 

The Error multibyte string occurs when you have invalid symbols in a character string. 

I had a similar error and resolved it by removing some special symbol that got added when pulling the data in json format.
