Hi, Jenn,
I was given a large male hairless dumbo rat that was released outside along with two other rats by some irresponsible people.  One rat was hit by a car, one was shot, and the hairless was eventually rescued by a couple who was concerned about the colder temperatures at night.  One thing I don't know is how long he was outside, but he has been outside long enough to become wild.  He has either not been socialized or he was abused, and is not used to being hand fed. He has bitten me twice.  I can't keep him because it's hard for me to even clean his cage.  I think he is also blind.  He is not overtly aggressive, but I think he bites because he doesn't see or recognize food being offered.  He looks very healthy, has very nice pink skin and big dumbo ears, and I named him Robert because he is big and strong.
Can you find someone who would be willing to work with this guy?  He's really very handsome.

Thanks.    Sandy

That poor thing. I'm held up, sick in bed but over the next few days I will be putting out some feelers. Where are you located now? He might be blind, hairless and Pink eyes tend to have a harder time seeing than reg rats.. You could try keeping the lights dim and put your hand by the cage, move slowly - let him get used to your smell.. Also make sure your hands do not smell like food when you are near him. He shouldn't be biting, so its possible with his lack of or bad eyesight that someone rough handled him and he is really on the defense since he may not have seen it coming (hand or whatever happened). Let me know if anything changes.. I will be in touch too, if I hear anything. Other than that I will post your email in my notices, so you will most likely hear from potential adopters.

Take care,
Jennifer Mitchell

Thank you, Jen, for your reply.  Robert has been returned to the couple who rescued him from the outside, and I told them that I made attempts to contact people who could help.  I think they really do not want to keep him, but they would rather keep him than worry about him being hurt.  Please continue to do what you can, and he is retrievable whenever more permanent help is available.

I hope you feel better very soon.

Sandy

Ok, Sandy. Thank you for the update. I do feel a little better, but I'm still in bed. Please let the couple know that if they have any questions/problems that they can ask me and Ill do what I can to help while we're waiting for a more permanent solution. What city do they live in? Talk to you soon. Thanks!

I think I was told they live in Eastlake.  I will give a copy of this email to my neighbor so they will be updated.  Thank you again!

Oh, I am in Wickliffe now, and retired now.  Time flies.

Hi there,
I've been following this conversation because I added myself to this group awhile ago, and awesomely, I get any notifications if anything is going on. Im writing because I initially looked this group up because i love rats and I want to help the ones that need homes and care. I am currently doing school from home and if this rat your speaking of needs a home, I can definitely take up the responsibilities. Im in Maple Heights OH, near Cleveland, and I have had two rats already.

Thanks and have a good day!
