All was lovely until I changed my http access on the site to :

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on
RewriteRule ^.*$ https://%{SERVER_NAME}%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]

after I installed certificates

now I cannot retrieve a directory listing on known good sftp credentials trying a test connection from edit site gives above error message
I have tried both http: and https: protocols for the site, port 22 -- I am hosted by 1and1 so I copy the connection details from them

any thoughts ?

Do you have turbo enabled?
If so check the web url is set to https.

If I disable 'turbo' in edit-site then I can connect with web-url = http or https
enabling 'turbo' means that I cannot connect in either

It could be that the htaccess is interfering with the proxy script.
If you share the site with me, I can take a look.

From the site menu (next to the site dropdown), there is a menu option called share site.

Thanks, this is fixed.
You should be able to enable Turbo mode again now.

The proxy script was showing strict errors, I've tweaked the error handling to prevent this.
