We have several implementations of the Windows Service Provider running successfully. In each case, the SP is installed on the Web Server.
I was under the impression that I could install a Windows Service Provider on a single, separate server, and protect websites that are on other Windows servers. However, it now makes sense to me that if I want to protect a web server, the SP must be physically installed on the same server as the Web Server. Can someone confirm or deny this for me?

Yes. You might get away with sharing a single shibd over the network
but you'd still have to install it on every host.
