to Shetran

Hi Steve,

I am learning to use the SHETRAN Hydrological model. So far I have started very well using the SHETRAN GUI and able to set up basic simulations for my project. Since my study catchment area is very large, approximately 128 000km2 I am forced to work with a very course DEM resolutions and of course making sure the DEMs have rows and columns below 36x36 maximum limit permitted by the SHETRAN GUI v2.101  I am using.

So far I have created and run sets of models files for my several sub-catchments. However, for some,  I feel should work with a finer DEM resolution for more detail, but I am restricted by the 36x36 rows and column limit except if I move to use a Standard version that allows higher DEM resolutions with more than 36x36 rows and columns.

I am not very clear on moving to the Standard version and continue using my same files created with SHETRAN GUI application. Do I use the same text files created in SHETRAN GUI application in the Standard Shetran version environment?  Or is it possible to use the same text files that I created in SHETRAN GUI? If so how? My problem is transiting my work/files from SHETRAN GUI and work using the Standard Shetran version.

Please help.

Hi Charles,

It is good you are managing to use the Shetran GUI. The old version of the GUI had a limitation of a 36x 36 grid but in Shetran GUI v2.101 it was increased to 50x50. Obviously this is still limited although it does make calibration easy because there are short run times.

All the different versions are confusing. Within the GUI it produces in the working folder a lot of files called input_CATCHNAME***.txt and one called rundata_CATCHNAME.txt (these are produced in the background and not seen when you run the GUI). These can be used with the standard version of Shetran. However, it is NOTwant you want as it uses the same number of rows and columns.

What you want to do is use what is called the "easy setup", which is in the latest Shetran standard download. You need to set up an XML file with the parameters values and links to the DEM, mask, land-use, rainfall data etc that you would use in the GUI. This is harder than using the GUI but not to difficult (there is some documentation and a video available). This allows up to  a 200x200 grid. So I would suggest you have a go with this version and if you are having problems then let me know.

Running with a 200x200 grid will make the run times much slower.

Regards,
Steve

Thank you, Steve, for your valuable advice and guidance. All my six models are now running using the Shetran Standard version. I am now calibrating the models to get the mass balance correct.

I will come back to you if I find any problems.

Thank you.

Regards

Charles
