THE SILENCE KIT
Post punk / Alternative / Indie
The Silence Kit plays textured, moody rock music. The band is based in
New Jersey and Philadelphia, PA, and was started by Patrick McCay in
2002, as a home recording project. Inspired in equal parts by post
punk, shoegaze, neo-psychedelia, avant-garde and indie rock, countless
shows have been played and more than a few band members have come and
gone through the years.
The Silence Kit released their debut LP “In Regulated Measure,” in
February of 2006. The album was very well received and garnered many
positive reviews. The press favorably compared the band to the likes
of The Cure, Joy Division, The Sound, Chameleons, Echo and the
Bunnymen, Nick Cave, David Lynch film soundtracks, and more. A live
band was assembled to support the album and they quickly began writing
and recording for the second album. The band played many shows in 2005
and 2006, sharing the stage with bands like I Love You But I’ve Chosen
Darkness, Early Day Miners, Windsor for the Derby, among others. The
second TSK album, entitled “A Strange Labor” was released on July
19th, 2008. It was a split release by Azteca Records and Breakeven
Records.

NORTHERN VALENTINE
Minimalist / Ambient / Rock
Northern Valentine is husband and wife, Robert and Amy Brown, and
friends who join us from time to time. We’ve been making music since
1997 and have collaborated with a number of different musicians.
We are from Philadephia, Pennsylvania and we love to play live shows,
so spread the word and invite us over to your place. Depending on who
plays with us during our live shows, performances often feature band
members switching instruments several times during the performance and
can range from quiet and meditative drones, to loud and fuzzy
instrumental post-rock, often within the same set. We have played
clubs, bars, living rooms, churches, restaurants, classrooms, etc. If
we have to do so, we’ll stand on our amps or sit on your lap to fit
into the space…no venue is too large or too small. In June 2008, we
played four shows in Iceland, including an historic show on June 8th,
2008, in which Northern Valentine played in Reykjavík, Iceland, with
Icelandic band, For a Minor Reflection, at Viðeyjarkirkja, on the
island of Viðey. The concert was the first musical performance to be
performed at the church since it was consecrated in 1774.

C.J BOYD
Other / Experimental / Freestyle
Equal parts ambient and virtuosic, melancholic and playful, CJ Boyd’s
bass playing melts glaciers, creating a sea of low, flowing rhythms,
while also supplying melodies that soar over the ocean to dizzy the
sun in its path. Waves of bass loops are garnished with harmonica
drones and constant improvisational exploration. Deep-sea-diving for
the hungry and alone. While certainly following in the footstep of
great bassists like Mingus and Meyer, Boyd’s aesthetic sensibility
also seeks to wed the minimalism of Reich and Riley with what might be
called the maximalism of Beethoven’s chamber music. Add some Moondog,
Authur Russell, Godspeed, Eluvium. But with the improvisational
prowess culled from jazz. Not a “bassplayer” in the usual sense of the
word. But something refreshing and impressive—with fingers that only
know how to dance to the deepest tunes.

THE NEW HEAVEN AND NEW EARTH
Regional Mexican / Celtic / Psychedelic
Roger Alejandro Martinez is that rare songwriter, the avant
classicist. The fruits of his craft are both foreign yet oddly
familiar. The fingerpicked guitars and autoharp recall a distant
America, now just a memory; yet the country All Saints Day calls home
is not Appalachia. It is farther away, foggier, a nation born of myth
and superstition. Understated strings weave in and out of harmoniums,
like a whip-poor-will lost among the pines. Pianos ring out from
beneath the haze. Harmonies haunt these songs like the ghosts of so
many ashen witches.

FILMSTAR
Indie / Alternative / Pop
While the name “Filmstar” might be evocative of times gone by, it is
actually meant as a wry nod to the band’s very self-aware bid for fame
and fortune. Their sound is less like something from your mother’s
record collection and more like the love-child of Blondie and a B-17
Bomber.
Glossy lead vocals and guitar over-driven with shimmering treble
contrast with cheerfully aggressive gang vocals, all of it laid over a
foundation of solid drumming (full of hidden gems) and bass that
pulses with anticipation of the next big thing. Filmstar’s melodies,
leaping and plunging, their incisive lyrics, and their unabashed pop
hooks have roused audiences from Philadelphia to New York to the
Jersey Shore, over the past year, with scheduled appearances now
ranging as far north as New Hampshire/Vermont and south to DC and
Baltimore. Their live performance is full of energy and not to be
missed.
Twisted love songs (like “Promise Me, Promise Me”) and biting
commentaries on corruption and vanity (“The World Is Mine”) reach out
to grab hold of a generation that can appreciate the irony of having
sold their souls to corporate America and received only this lousy t-
shirt in return.

TOM THUMB
Indie / Folk / Spanish pop
Quietly, ever so quietly… there is a profound and amazing modern folk
movement going on in Boston. At the heart of that revival and beauty
is The best Boston Record Released to date in the young 2008. It’s
“The Taxidermist” by Andy Arch whose nom de guerre - Tom Thumb -
serves and describes him well. You see, Andy has a very pleasant, easy-
going nature. But this appearance belies the fact that this artist is
a ferocious tiger - a quality that emerges during performances and
recording. Andy performs all parts and instruments on the tracks on
“The Taxidermist” with few exceptions. They have a term for this - I
believe it’s called genius… (But I won’t say that because it would
upset Andy.) I saw this first hand when Tom played one of the RSL Live
Music Showcases in Cambridge. (All the performers were great - my jaw
was on the floor half the night.) The music of Tom Thumb is a an
absolute feather in Boston’s cap. “The Taxidermist” gets 4 of 5 stars!
It’s a must have record for acoustic and folk lovers!

KELLY AND THE RUTHS
Folk / Acoustic / Jazz
“Alone or accompanied by a six-piece band, this seasoned musician is
known for her soothing stage performance and entrancing vocals.
Compared by fans to such musicians as Norah Jones, Feist, and She &
Him, Kelly Ruth has a unique style that speaks–and sings–for itself.”
“It’s a given that when Kelly Ruth steps on stage she will enchant her
audience with the smooth sounds of her jazzy lyrics. But this solo
artist doesn’t require a guitar to get her fans snapping along to her
folk music vibrations-all she needs is an upright bass… Her enthusiasm
for creating positive change is just one thing that sets Kelly Ruth
apart from other artists. The release of her debut album, Wild Things,
has revealed her raw talent for original songwriting, with the
floating melodies of “Sunny Day Love” and “Hush Darling” catching the
ears of folk, pop, and jazz lovers alike.”

BUSMAN’S HOLIDAY
Rock / Other / Folk Rock
Busman’s Holiday is a two person band blending the melodic charm of lo-
fi acoustics with the ecstatic showmanship of classic rock ‘n’ roll.
The singer/songwriter duo is accompanied by a string section who fill
out their complexly euphonic ballads of love, loss, lust and outer
space. Born and raised in Bloomington, Indiana, the pair and their
intrepid band of string playing companions have toured the U.S. and
Canada extensively the past three years, recently appearing on Day
Trotter and If You Make It’s Pink Couch Sessions. Though adept in a
D.I.Y. aesthetic of acoustic busking with only a guitar and a suitcase
drum set, the brothers are equally at home when sharing the stage with
their three talented string players, who add a rich, layered musical
texture to their unique songs of wanderlust and first love. Evoking a
classic tent-show rock sound joined with the affable atmosphere of the
assured vaudevillian, Busman’s Holiday both charms and impresses with
their own unique blend of humor and assured musical talent. -Nile
Arena, author featured in the book, Horror 101

A STUDY IN HER
Indie / Rock / Electronica
BIO: Started in 1998 as just improvising with a delay pedal, a cheap
keyboard, and a four-track. Rather than being organized around live
performance, it was something just for the recording medium. It
eventually started to include writing with other people and better
technology. Since then there have been four full-length albums (on
Honest In Secret, Sex Cells/Electronic Eel), a split CD with CBGaV,
and spots on Mall’s remix album (tbtmo), Soft Complex’s EP, and City-
State’s 2nd album.
In 2001 ASiH started doing live shows. The live band has been a
shifting cast, but has included Tamara Black (jenhitt), Lucas
Carscadden (Dead Mechanical), Andrew Black (The Explosion), Alex
Hedstrom (The Axis Set), Justin Moyer (Supersystem/El Guapo, Edie
Sedgwick), Jon Moser (AV Club, CBGaV), Phil Apostol (Up Up Down Down
Left Right Left Right B A Start), Mike Mikowicz (the mirror orchid),
Julie Cousin, and Magda Nakassis. Recordings have included Tamara
Black, Alex Hedstrom, Lucas Carscadden, Justin Moyer, Andrew Black,
Fluke Leming, Pavan Segal, Kyung-Nah Koh, Julie Cousin, Judith Kaplan,
Mike Mikowicz, Shakthisree Gopalan, Kedarnath Sairam, and Elsie Muniz.
The latest ASiH album, “Another Year in Philadelphia” came out in July
31, 2007 on Sex Cells Records and Electronic Eel Records. ASiH took
hiatus from 2007-2009 when Costas was in Tamil Nadu, India, though
ASiH kept writing (in India and over the internet). The material for
the next album, tentatively titled ‘In, Out, and About’ is being put
together currently. In 2008 ASiH recorded a remix of Kanye West’s
‘Homecoming’ and Portishead’s ‘Small’ (for Noise Floor Crew’s remix
album ‘Three’), as well as the original track ‘Buy Art’ [featuring
Justin Moyer] for an Electronic Eel compilation.
