Gora Gora Orkestar is a fabulous brass band that will be performing this Friday, August 22 at the Avalon Ballroom for BIFD, 8 pm! They'll be performing high-energy dance music to lift your spirits and pleasure your ears. The Ballroom is large enough for you to choose your volume level, and the renovation is beautiful. And even if you don't want to do the dances it's great music to just boogie to. Here's a sample:

At 6:30 there will be a free beginner's dance class in Sodal (as usual for Fridays), down the hall from the Ballroom at 6185 Arapahoe Rd, Boulder, CO, and then Gora Gora starts at 8 pm in the Ballroom. $15.
Hey folks -
What's special about this party tonight?
1. Gora Gora Orkestar is an 11-piece brass band that has been focusing on Balkan and klezmer music since 2009. The members are exceptional musicians -- several are music teachers in metro Denver schools -- and draw from their experience in other traditions such as New Orleans jazz, blues and mariachi. In this ensemble they go deep into the rich world of Eastern European brass music. When Gora Gora starts to play, their pumping music energizes the room, whether you're dancing or just listening.
2. I am honored to get to sing some songs with them tonight. Gora Gora has worked to ensure a set with diverse dances and a combination of instrumental and instrumental-with-vocals material. It is a thrill to sing with these guys playing! (Yes, brass is loud. As Biz points out below, the ballroom is large and you can position yourself closer or farther away; also, earplugs will be available.)
3. Wish them well on their Balkanalia debut next weekend! Did you know that Gora Gora has been invited to be one of the featured bands at Balkanalia!? That's a weekend-long Balkan music and dance camp that takes place near Portland, Ore., over Labor Day weekend. It is exciting to see our "local guys make good" on the larger stage of US Balkan music.
4. Boulder International Folk Dancers has been keeping the torch lit on Friday nights for international folk dancing for decades. As a former several-nights-per-week folk dancer turned folk musician, I am proud to witness BIFD's increasing support of live music from a variety of bands in the area. Please consider lending your individual support to their efforts tonight.
Cheers,
Julie Lancaster
