Festo featuring Planina
Thursday, January 26, 7-9:30 p.m.
Jungle Room,
Mercury Café
2199 California St., Denver, CO 80205
Admission is free but donations are encouraged so the organizers can keep presenting these events.
A few years ago, Tung Pham of
Gora Gora Orkestar, a group that plays brass music from the Balkans and other traditions, was dreaming of a way to bring the energy of the Boulder Balkan Bash to Denver. The pandemic presented a major
obstacle, but last fall Tung, together with his friend
Eitan Kantor of Hadgaba and now the Denver Klezmer All Stars, launched
Festo Festo, with some help for the first few events from the Alex Wilson Legacy Fund. It's a once-a-month concert and party in the Jungle Room at the Mercury Café. Each month they bring in
a different guest group to vary the energy.
This month it’s Planina’s turn to be the guest group!
Each of the three groups--Gora Gora, the Denver Klezmer All Stars, and Planina--will play a set of music, followed by a community jam session and singalong. Bring your instruments! Most--but not all--of the music throughout the evening is dance music and most
of the dances are easy to follow, no partner needed! Come early and order dinner, come later and order tea or something stronger, but come down and join us! And bring ear plugs--it’ll be loud in the Jungle Room!
7:00 - 7:30 p.m. Denver Klezmer All Stars
7:40 - 8:10 p.m. Gora Gora Orkestar
8:20 - 9:00 p.m. Planina
9:00 - 9:30 p.m. Community Jam Session

Glendi at the Avalon
Saturday, February 18
Potluck 6 p.m.
Dancing 7 - 9:30 pm
Sodal Hall at the Avalon
6185 Arapahoe Rd.
Boulder, CO 80303
$10 donation requested but not required
"Glendi" is a Greek word for party, revelry, merrymaking, shindig! Join us at this informal party, including a potluck dinner starting at 6 p.m. (the musicians play better when fed). Afterwards, get up and dance to the Glendi Band from 7 to 9 p.m. or so (the
musicians play WAY better when people get up and dance).
The band for this Glendi will be
Sherefe: James Hoskins (bouzouki, cello, vocals),
Jesse Manno (bouzouki, laouto, oud, vocals),
Julie Lancaster (accordion, vocals),
Brett Bowen (percussion), and
Dexter Payne (clarinet, ney). Primarily traditional Greek music, with other Balkan flavors occasionally thrown in.
Mostly easy dances, done in a line holding hands or separately--no partner needed! Quick dance lessons provided for each tune, or just follow along behind and join the line when you're ready.
Note that this event is in Sodal Hall, not the big ballroom. We won’t have access to the kitchen, so please bring serving utensils for your potluck contribution. Paper plates and eating utensils will be provided. Masks and vaccinations strongly suggested but
optional.
Don't let the $10 donation request stop you. Donate if you can; all proceeds benefit the musicians. Thanks to Boulder International Folkdancers for sponsoring the space and to Yianni and Arnie for special band support.
Can’t wait! See you there!
