If you are interested in attending small group workshops on Turkish singing and folk instruments, read on.  If not, please forgive the intrusion.

2008 BOULDER, COLORADO TURKISH MUSIC INTENSIVE!

 

All events conducted by Jesse Manno (founding member of the band Sherefe) and held at his studio/home/backyard at 4554 Beachcomber Court, Boulder CO, 80301 unless noted.

 

Friday May 30:

5:30-7 pm: Hors d’oeuvres, espresso and aperitifs on the house

7-9:30 pm: Ensemble Workshop.  Modest ability on an instrument recommended.  Jesse will share some lesser-known Turkish tunes and/or guide participants in Makam (Turkish modal scales- similar to Arabic) and Taksim (personal expression therein).

 

Saturday May 31:

10:30 am -12:30 pm:            Beginning/Intermediate Turkish Singing

1:30 pm - 4:00 pm:            Beginning/Intermediate Long Neck Saz

7:30 pm   CONCERT/DANCE PARTY with SHEREFE & special guest Lara Jai.

Live at Trident Coffee House on the back patio, 9th and Pearl, Boulder. Workshop participants free!  General public, $10.00

 

Sunday June 1:

9:30 – 10:30 am:            Complimentary continental backyard breakfast

10:30 am - 1:00 pm:             Beginning/Intermediate Short Neck Saz

2:00 pm - 4:00 pm:             Intermediate/Advanced Turkish Singing

4:30 pm – 7:00 pm:             Intermediate/Advanced Long and Short Neck Saz (combined)

7:00 pm - ?                         The grill will be lit and the corkscrew busy!

 

Teacher’s statement of eligibility:  “I Jesse Manno, to the best of my knowledge, am Colorado’s most qualified person to conduct these long overdue workshops on saz and Turkish singing.  I have twice spent several weeks in Turkey, studied with fine Turkish and American teachers, and been performing regionally for Turkish and American audiences since 1994.  I have taught Middle Eastern music workshops elsewhere, taught composition at Naropa University, and taught in the CU Dance Program since 2000.  But more importantly, I was recently given an espresso maker and 2 cases of wine, so bring your curiosity, musicality and zest for life and let’s celebrate a rich cultural tradition!”

 

Advance registration required as studio space is limited

All workshops are $25 per person.

To register, please send an email to ma...@colorado.edu with a list of your desired workshops.  If you register late in the game, be sure to check your email before coming in case we are already full or in case of changes of location or cancellations.

You may pay “at the door”, but please arrive early so you don’t miss anything.

To register and pay in advance, print this form with your classes circled, enclose a check payable to Jesse Manno and return to the address above by May 29.
