Sherefe’s James Hoskins and Julie Lancaster will present an ensemble workshop teaching two songs, one in an odd meter and one in a 4/4. Both are common dance rhythms in Greece and the Balkans.

The workshop will teach these rhythms by ear, in the time-honored traditional method of the region, but sheet music will be available for those who prefer it. All kinds of instruments and voices are welcome!

Rhythm, melody, harmony, and chordal accompaniment will be introduced, as they all play a part in creating a vibrant, danceable, and expressive performance. Sherefe will then perform these learned tunes in our concert later in the day, in order to allow the participants the opportunity to see the material realized by an experienced ensemble.

Vaccinated patrons are welcome inside. Un-vaccinated patrons are welcome on the patio.

It’s been a long time since Sherefe had the opportunity to perform at Caffè Sole, Boulder’s jazz club with wonderful dinner and drinks. Here’s what the restaurant management has to say:

Because we give all of the cover to the band, we rely heavily on dinner sales to support the venue and we have an awesome menu. We have opened up the cafe onto the patio and have outdoor heaters, which makes sitting on the patio comfortable and people can hear the music well. We don’t take reservations, so we recommend that you arrive early to get a table and enjoy our delicious dinner menu and selection of excellent international wines and beer.

This concert will focus on Arabic and Turkish music, with some Greek and Balkan music added in. The quartet appearing in this concert is Jesse Manno on bouzouki, baglama, ud and vocals; James Hoskins on cello, gudulka, bouzouki, and vocals; Brett Bowen on percussion; and Dexter Payne on clarinet, saxophone and ney.

Caffè Sole’s Covid 19 Policy

If you have been vaccinated you are welcome to sit inside with mask or on the patio without a mask. If have not been fully vaccinated then you are welcomed to join us only on the patio and wear a mask except when eating and drinking. Thank you for supporting a healthy environment so that everyone can enjoy our evening performances in good health.

Alex’s Virtual Folk Arts Series Presents: A Dance Party with Barbelfish Balkan Band

Saturday, October 23, 7:30-9:30pm
Live at The Avalon, 6185 Arapahoe Rd, Boulder 80303 (
map)
and Streaming Online! (
register for livestream)

Barbelfish Balkan Band will appear as the final presentation in Alex’s Virtual Folk Arts Series 2021, a project of the Alex Wilson Legacy Fund. Barbelfish plays soul-stirring traditional music for dancing and listening from Eastern Europe and beyond, especially from Macedonia, Bulgaria and Greece. Exquisite melodies, soaring harmonies, driving rhythm, unusual instruments! Before the pandemic, they performed several times per year, but they haven’t played for a live audience since January 2020. They are so excited to play for you!

This party will be both in-person and live-streamed (the group’s first!).

For this performance, Barbelfish is Amy Self - clarinet, kaval, vocals; James Hoskins - gudulka (Bulgarian folk fiddle), cello, bouzouki, vocals; Julie Lancaster - tambura, accordion, vocals; Jesse Manno - percussion, vocals; Steve Mullins - tambura, guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, and special guest Laura Osterman, vocals.

Alex's Series is excited to present TWO ways to enjoy the concert:

  • Attend the live, in-person party at the Avalon. Proof of vaccination required for admission; masks required. Donation requested ($5 suggested) from those who are able, to defray the cost of the hall. No advance registration for the live party—just come to the Avalon in time for the party. Many dances are easy to follow, but there’s plenty of space to sit and watch if you prefer. Potluck snacks welcome! Doors open at 7:00.
  • Live-stream the concert on YouTube. A great option if you live too far away to attend in person or would like to enjoy the show from home. Attendance is free, but advance registration is required for the livestream; register at this link.

10/29 • Balkan Bump NFTrees Tour w/ Shuj Roswell Live and Forrest Pump

This is a touring Balkan brass band. Don’t miss your chance to catch them here in Denver at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom. Tickets: bit.ly/BalkanBumpCervs

More info on the Facebook events page.

Here’s a taste: https://www.facebook.com/balkanbump/videos/614422669728814

Balkan Bump is the newest project from trumpet player, producer and ethnomusicologist Will Magid.
Balkan Bump debuted with the single “Aymo” alongside superstar collaborators Gramatik and Talib Kweli. Gramatik quickly championed the new project; unveiling Balkan Bump's live show on his Re:Coil Tour and releasing Balkan Bump’s debut EP on his Lowtemp label imprint in 2018. Balkan Bump then blossomed to international audiences, performing at Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lightning In A Bottle and Electric Forest, and releasing collaborations with CloZee, Beats Antique, The Gift Of Gab, The Geek x Vrv, Fakear, and more.
Musically, Balkan Bump is a fusion of live instruments, world influences and lush electronic production. His releases flaunt experience as an instrumentalist and arranger, fusing energetic Balkan brass with heavy electronic production and hip-hop influences.
Balkan Bump’s newest EP NFTrees features an environmentally-focused NFT release which Will explains:
The music industry needs to change! A few months ago I sold one of my songs as an NFT. It was an exciting new adventure, but something about it didn't feel quite right. It felt so intangible, and there was a lot of concern about the environmental impact from crypto currencies...
So I created NFTrees (Nitrogen Fixing Trees). With this project I’m not only reducing the environmental impact from the blockchain (geek alert), but I’ll also offset all of Balkan Bump’s touring carbon footprint. I'm releasing a brand new EP as an NFTree, where all sales go towards carbon credits that will help me reach carbon neutrality for the tour.
I hope you'll join me on the NFTrees journey. See you soon on the dancefloor 🌿🌳🎺

Shuj Roswell Live -
Shuj Roswell is the latest musical creation of Denver's own, Mark A. Cooley. Releasing his debut album, Flying High Above The World, on Michal Menert's Super Best Records label in 2015, he carefully curates vinyl samples of 60's and 70's funk and soul to use as a foundation for his production. Fusing traditional sample based hip-hop with warm analog synthesis and hard hitting beats sets the table for a sound Mark has come to call Funktronadelic.
