Hi Everyone,

A week ago the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club did a cleanup with Shelton Clean-Up Project on Todd Road.

While we are aware fast food restaurants are often a source of increased litter, I was surprised to see this to such a great extent.

Not only was the bulk of Todd Road cluttered with high amounts of McDonald’s cups, straws, bags and wrappers but also the large grassy bank between the McDonald’s parking lot and Todd Road.

As I was picking up garbage, I witnessed someone throw a red McDonald’s pouch of french fries from the parking lot above, down onto the grass not too far from where I was standing. Fries went flying all around. I took a picture.

After the cleanup, I drove around the McDonald’s parking lot. There was one garbage can for the entire outdoor premises and it was overflowing.

The idea of imposing an additional fee to fast food chains sounds like a good idea to me, although I am not sure it is allowed.

Some fast food restaurants have multiple garbage cans, including garbage cans past the drive-through window with an extended opening. I heard this was brought up at P&Z and McDonald’s originally agreed to have that but in the end refused. I would like to find out why. And also find out what exactly the city can do to encourage businesses to have more garbage cans and keep their premises cleaner.

Thank you,
Sharon

Sharon,

I share your observations first hand.

I'm less concerned about businesses having more garbage cans onsite versus the town is now needed to assist with litter problems instead of just clean-up groups and individuals.

As expected, since McDonalds opened there are now bags, cups, Big Mac containers, red fry containers and the like now alongside all the other fast food place items on roadsides..

Nells Rock Rd, highly traveled and visible to many residents and visitors, now has McDonalds litter all over it also.
Pic attached is the entrance to Nells Rock trailhead.

I'm not sure if 5 additional garbage cans onsite at McDonalds would even help, because of course people grab their food from the drive thru, don't eat onsite and when finished throw it out of their cars.

We need to have a rotating Litter committee member speak at every BOA Full Meeting.

See you Wednesday.

Ken

I'll be there! I finished my backpacking route in Maine faster than expected.

I mentioned this TED Talk at last night’s meeting. I’m not sure if we can make use of the app, but much of what’s in the talk are things we’ve discussed. At least perhaps we’ll earn a standing ovation someday like this guy did! 😊

This app makes it fun to pick up litter

I also did some digging into the McDonalds franchisee, who has not been publicly identified. The person or entity bought the property from the developer Manuel Moutinho (Mark IV Construction) who also built the restaurant I believe.

Some businesses are legally required to post their license in a visible spot. The franchisee's name may be on this license, often posted near the lobby or drive-thru window. The manager may be able to tell us who the franchisee. We’re nearby so we’ll stop by and see if we can get the information … and avoid the French fries.

I sent an email to McDonalds corporate asking for a name. We’ll see what happens with that.

Best,

Steve

Very interesting! Have you tried out the app?

The app comes down to people taking pictures of trash and posting it. You can set up challenges to get people together to collect and post trash. There’re leaderboards of members and countries … the top ones over the last 30 days are World Litter Run with 8,022 pieces and Netherlands with 25,286. There is no info on the members that I can find. The total pieces of litter pickup are >24M for the app.

I think it can be useful, but the key is getting people interested in ongoing litter pickup and building from there.

I stopped by McDonalds. There was no license posted. The manager, Anglica, said corporate won’t allow her to give out the name of the franchisee. She did give me a McDonalds CT number to call: 203-367-3621.

Great follow-up on McDonald’s. I called that number and left a message about the litter on their property.

I downloaded the Litteratti app to my phone and started using it. The first litter I came across was at the Eklund Garden parking area, and it was McDonalds. Then I logged mostly beverage containers along the trails at Indian Well.

I see potential for having High School students use this a part of an independent community service project. I stopped allowing those because I’m certain we had kids (and even some parents!) cheating. But perhaps if they log their litter into the app, that can be used to verify. Of course they could always just log the litter and not pick it up I guess.

I obtained the name and number of the franchisee but was so bogged down with Shelton Day, I did not call yet. I can try tomorrow. Unless Steve wants to? I was  thinking I could also mention Rotary since we adopted Todd Road.

Thank you,
Sharon

Go ahead, Sharon. I don’t know what to say about “Rotary…”
