The Citizens Advisory Board has reached out to the Conservation Commission regarding support to preserve the 2 mile island location at the Housatonic River. This will be on our agenda during an Executive Session for Wednesday. Property acquisition issues we keep out of the public eye to protect the negotiating capability towards purchase.
2 mile island used to be an airport (my father flew in there), and more recently the location for Island Sand & Gravel operations. IS&G shut down in recent years, and the CAB group has been cooperating with the Mayor to try and preserve it via the route of Federal involvement to be included in the Stewart Mckinney Refuge area along the Housatonic. The CAB has already reached out to Rosa DeLaura's office. (see attached letter from earlier this September)
Aleta Minor in the SEDC office has provided some drone footage of the 2 mile island area (she is a member of the CAB). I have uploaded them to our YouTube channel, but made the videos "unlisted" meaning you have to have this link to see the video since it will not show up in a search of YouTube/Google for the content.
I encourage watching these prior to the meeting. The first video is along the Housatonic River from apx the Beacon Point Marina (Murphy's Boatyard) heading north toward the Rte8 bridge.:
The second video is shorter and focuses only on the 2 mile Island area, approaching it from the south and north directions. Both videos were taken during 2024.
