I’ll quickly note that I sent out three letters today to homeowners who were dumping piles of landscaping debris next to a trail. I’ll mention this again at the next meeting so they get in the minutes, since there were some aggravating factors.

Marc & Margo Dilieto, 30 Mayflower Lane: I was hiking the Paugussett and witnessed this homeowner dumping piles of leaves at the edge of the trail. Years of this dumping has created an eyesore and even drainage issues. I spoke to the homeowner and he justified it by saying there were already leaves there and there were no signs (signs have been removed as soon as I put them up).  I have a thought about cleaning up that trailhead and spoke briefly to Fran Freer, who though it was a great idea. Have City crews pull the old piles of landscaping debris out, do some attractive landscaping (shrubs, flower, woodchips). Perhaps if it is landscaped people will stop treating it as a wasteland and dump.

Sara & Marcio Correia, 85 Independence Drive: In 2024 these homeowners constructed a large shed on city property and there were other materials and activities. They did move the shed. But last week I noted large piles of landscaping debris directly opposite their access trail, with the access trail showing double tracks for a four-wheeled vehicle. This is under the powerlines right on the edge of the trail. They also continue to park a truck in front of the open space instead of their own property. I don’t know how people feel about that. It’s highly visible while you’re hiking because there are no trees, and they have plenty of their own frontage where they could park.

Eric Black, 110 Shelton Ave: Back in April, I sent notices to everyone who lives across the highway from the new Curtiss Brook Trail explaining the new trail and emphasizing tha no dumping of landscaping debris was allowed. In October, as I was driving by, I witness Mr. Black hauling debris across the highway and dumping it. I pulled out, introduced myself, and explained why the dumping wasn’t allowed. A few days later I was working down below and saw him dumping again. He rolled his eyes at me, scoffed, and said there were already sticks, as if that made it OK.

Hi Teresa,  as the monitor for the Mayflower trail, I want to apologize I haven't been out there to see the accumulation of debris.  I personally really appreciate your efforts with keeping on top of this on behalf of the committee and Shelton residents.
-Sheri ***aka disgraced trail monitor :(
