It has just occurred to me that we do not have an official name for the Ecklund Garden and the Girl Scout Troop was hoping to put up a sign for it at the garden.  What is the sign going to say?

I suppose the name could stay Ecklund Garden...or Shelton Lakes Garden...Wilber Wildflower Garden....

Any thoughts?

I like Wilber Wildflower Garden but I say let the Girl Scouts decide.

I do too. Rolls off the tongue well and seems appropriate.

My suggestion is Ecklund Gardens as it was Mr Ecklund who created that terraced area with his log cabin area.  We always referred to it as that, but your point about having an "official" name is well taken.  With Stewart Woods nearby or Shelton Lakes references, there should be something holistic to our rhyme and reason.  It will become a public safety issue for people to radio that they were injured at location xyz, and it will become a marketing issue for public awareness on brochure/hiking guides.

How about Ecklund Ecology Gardens, as I assume that not everything
there will be wildflowers.

All due respect to Harriet, I'm not fond of naming places after people just to "remember" them.  If they had a direct involvement with the location (say instrumental in it's preservation) then I can see the justification.  I say leave it as it has been referred to - has historic reference.  I really don't want to open up the concept of people wanting to name sections of trails or open space willy nilly.  Being near the school with the trail, I can see the possibility of someone wanting to name a trail, a bridge, a kiosk, etc after a teacher, student, etc.  I just philosophically see no value in naming a place after someone that had no tie to the "place" being named.  Structurally, any naming of a location as official moniker has to go before the BoA, and that just is not something I want to expose this concept thru because of what I perceive it will bring to our table down the road.  Imagine a SHS student is killed in a tragic crash and they want to remember he/she by naming the RecPath after him - how do you turn that down on less you have a clear standard?  Similar to the Tribute Walk downtown: clear standards should be in place for how/who people are recognized for their contribution to Shelton, or in this case our trails and open space areas.

Now wait a minute...between the authority of a bunch of girl scouts and the BoA....wouldn't you fear the wrath of the former over the later??? Ha.

I'm all for historic references...does that mean we get to keep Mount Trashmore and Blakeman's Bog? ;-)

I would agree with Tom.. although the sentiment is nice… I don’t know who was around then but Harriet was frustrated with the Eklund property. We  waited a long time to get the an environmental report and after jumping through the hoops and getting 10K improvement $$. The house burned… she would sigh every time someone mentioned Eklund!  My vote is for Eklund Native Garden and we should keep Harriet in mind for some other tribute… certainly we can dedicate the Open Space Plan Update to Harriet, a nice prologue would be good as she did alot with Mary Beth Banks toward catergorizing and researching the Open Space Inventory.

Just a thought…

Summary:

Bill, Tom & Jim like Ecklund Gardens
Ed favors letting the Girls decide and likes Wilber Wildflower Gardens.
Do we need to wait for the next meeting to discuss or should I just tell
them to call it Ecklund Gardens? I need direction.

BTW, near Harriet's bench there is an amazing clump of Mayapple that is just
growing like crazy as well as some bloodroot that is also growing like a
weed there, both planted by the LT. Some of the other things aren't doing
too well, but those two wildflower clearly thrive in that lowland spot.

Eklund Gardens from 3 out of 4 responding sounds like direction.

If we are not going to name a place after people just to remember them, how are we going to forget Mr Eclund.I too, don't hold with naming places after people in these situations. How about associating the name with the trail? H

Hank, is that a vote for or against?

Actually the trail there is the John Dominick Trail, which was named
for the street, which was presumably named for someone named John
Dominick. Complicated.

Whatever it is I'm for it, or maybe not, I dunno. Let the GS Troop name it.

This back/forth should satisfy BillD, he has been wondering when the CC will encounter a non-unanimous direction.
