Teresa etal - couple of things I've noticed for you to look into:

  • Nells Rock parking across from LaHermitage - tree down near the entry.  Possible work party action with chainsaw.
  • Iroquois pipeline crossing Rte110 near Nicholdale - dumping of construction debris.
  • Trolley Bridge Open Space along Rte110 near the Indian Restaurant.  Dump Truck level deposits of spoils.
  • Dikovsky Chicken Farm structure area - I've had reports that spoils were brought there and deposited.  Not sure the last time we have been there.
  • Southbank Open Space - it was blocked off for a little while with concrete blocks, and there is now a lot of signage.  I know there are police issues with those crossing to the river.  Just wondering on information to us as it is categorized Open Space.
  • Open Space delineation on 390 Shelton Ave.  Should check that Open Space Markers installed are still there.

Follow-up on some items from Tom:

Teresa etal - couple of things I've noticed for you to look into:

  • Nells Rock parking across from LaHermitage - tree down near the entry.  Possible work party action with chainsaw.
  • The Trails Committee and Parks & Rec are both aware of this tree.

  • Trolley Bridge Open Space along Rte110 near the Indian Restaurant.  Dump Truck level deposits of spoils.
  • Looks like a staging area on state land for a permitted activity (the state ROW is as much as 150 feet back from the edge of pavement). There is silt fence around the piles and some are covered with plastic, suggesting contaminated soil. I suspect this is related to some ongoing work I saw just north of Southbank.

  • Iroquois pipeline crossing Rte110 near Nicholdale - dumping of construction debris.
  • I haven’t had a chance to get to that part of town yet, but there is no City Open Space in that area.  Highways & Bridges may be willing to remove it if it’s next to the road. Note for all: If you see a mattress, couch, pile of construction debris, etc along the side of the road, you can contact Highways & Bridges at 203-924-9277 or n.w...@cityofshelton.org and they are pretty good and coming out and cleaning that up. Not sure if they will clean up in the State ROW, though. That might need to go through DOT District 3 (there is a reporting form online).

  • Dikovsky Chicken Farm structure area - I've had reports that spoils were brought there and deposited.  Not sure the last time we have been there.
  • You called me when those reports were first coming in (Jan 2024) and I checked out the property at that time. There was no sign of activity.

  • Southbank Open Space - it was blocked off for a little while with concrete blocks, and there is now a lot of signage.  I know there are police issues with those crossing to the river.  Just wondering on information to us as it is categorized Open Space.
  • This property should probably be recategorized as a Parks & Rec property, since it has become an improved facility needing intensive management. They are the defacto managers at this time. I’m not sure if that’s ever been done before but I could ask around if you’re interested. I suspect it’s up to the Mayor.

  • Open Space delineation on 390 Shelton Ave.  Should check that Open Space Markers installed are still there.
  • I have added this to my list for this spring.

Other matters: Public Works has been pulling Autumn Olive out of the back field at Klapik this week (photo). Clean Sweep is wrapping up, and we had a few big cleanups, including Budderfly picking up 50 bags from Todd Road/Bridgeport Ave, and the Litter Committee picked up 18 bags from Shelton Lakes. Garden registration is still ongoing and a few new gardeners are getting oriented. Garlic Mustard has begun to bloom and I’m still working on getting it away from the trails and the Plant Management Area at Birchbank. Once it starts blooming it needs to be removed from the site because it will set seeds even after it’s been pulled. I had a corporate group there last week to help out, but there is still a lot more to do.  I am tentatively scheduled to go backpacking Sunday for 5 days and then we’ll have another longer trip later in the month.
