Huh? Is there a site chosen? 279 Soundview or is this th White House corner where bark park construction will be taking place?

As far as I know there has been no site chosen.  I met several months ago in the Mayor’s office with Guy, Linda and Ed (but not the Mayor), and there was unanimous opinion that the white house location would not work.   I emphasized at that time that we should put together a list of parameters and request Conservation’s recommendation for sites and everyone seemed fined with that.

If Conservation was out ahead of the pack, it would have more opportunity to affect the outcome.  The Open Space Plan started the process by outlining various open space uses and describing some considerations for each.  I would think the next logical step might be to proactively select a few of those potential uses in greatest demand, clarify what would be needed for each, identify potential sites, and report that to BOA and the Mayor.   We could have done that earlier for both the Dog Park and Community Gardens, since these are amenities that some surrounding towns have and for which our own residents might expect to have.  I think at this point Conservation has an image of not being interested in any use of open space other than trails/fishing, and therefore is skipped over when potential new uses come up.

Sheri, is the Community Gardens something you might want to be involved with?

Ok, bring your criteria to the CC meeting in January and we can discuss. I think there are several potential sites, based on the community gardens I’m familiar with.  I would tell you just by size that the garden area at Nells Rock is way too small.

OK, although the Mayor’s meeting will be shortly after Conservation’s next meeting, not before. However, I can say from previous discussions that they felt water was not necessary.

Certainly the Nells Rock site is way too small. BTW, the ploughed up ground should be rolled and reseeded with grass next spring.

I believe any community garden without a deer fence and water is doomed to be a failure. Not every year is as wet as this one. Most community gardens have a nominal charge that includes the cost of water. The water has an automatic timed turnoff master switch, like an air hose at gas stations.

Well, I was thinking along those lines as well, but the farmers insist they don’t have irrigation and can get their crops to grow and therefore it shouldn’t be necessary.

Farmers that grow fields of corn or wheat are one thing, but I know of no one with a backyard garden that does not have a hose and most likely a sprinkler to water the garden. I find it hard to believe that a tomato farmer in CT would not have access to water. And I suspect that any farmer with an herb garden or flower garden will also have a hose nearby. BTW, lots of community gardeners plant some or all flowers, not just vegetables and herbs.

Teresa.  I'm so sorry I have not gotten back to you.  Where ever I can be used.  Absolutely the garden sounds like an interesting project.  Andy went into the hospital again on friday..trying not to be alarming but his conditon got a little scary, I'll tell you more when I see you at the Christmas party.  I have no access to email at work,  strictly patient care.  Once home, sometimes not able to get to the computer with chores etc.  Pleased keep me posted.  Sheri
